    • RE: First Time travel for Conference- Best Practices?

If you're an introvert expect to be exhausted at the end of the day, like unusually so. When I went to SpiceWorld '14 it was my first IT conference, and by the time things wrapped up at the end of the day (usually 3-4) I was wiped out. I just went back to my hotel and crashed.

Don't bring a heavy laptop if you can avoid it. Even if you have to borrow something it is worth reducing your carrying around weight.

Contrary to advice others might give, I prefer not to drink much in the way of alcohol when I'm out of town. There are too many opportunities to do something you really regret when you don't have your normal routines and environments. You might even get locked in a parking garage (funny story that happened to @scottalanmiller if you're curious).

Don't count on getting anything done/read/fixed while you're there. It won't happen, or if you try it, it won't go well (generally speaking). Emergencies are another matter, but don't count on the above happening, or promise anyone that they will.

    • RE: DHCP Question...

So, .1 is not reserved. You can put your gateway anywhere in your range. It is simplest, and typical to put it at .1. The reason why organizations do not create space in their DHCP scope for static addresses is that they are managing devices that would have been assigned static addresses in the past, via other means. One way is using DHCP reservations. Another is using a utility or print server so that the end point never needs to know the current IP address of a printer.

I really want to show this movie to my girls. After seeing the way that my 5 year old daughter reacted to Hidden Figures I want to encourage her to explore what it means to be a strong woman in her way, not what society (right or left) would say.

just got my third "Hey come talk to us about a job" in the last 2 weeks.

      Enjoy being wanted. πŸ˜„

it kinda came out of no where too.
I just getting a LinkedIN wasn't a bad idea eh?

LinkedIn communications tend to be better than stuff from Monster, etc. The latter usually results in calls about developer positions, while my resume has zero development experience listed.

The random "I got your resume off the internet and was wondering if you wanted a job 6 hours away that pays a quarter of what you're looking for" connections are the best.

I'm getting the cash. 10 years of credit monitoring is worthless, same with their insurance. It won't prevent identity or credit card theft. And their reaction time is piss poor, you'd get a notice 1-3 months later of someone opens new account in your name, and by that time crook will probably charge thousands. Credit freeze is the only option and they don't offer that. Discover bank offers credit monitoring for free to anyone: https://csp.discover.com/free-credit-score/index.html

This is the best. "We promise to monitor and protect your data with all the quality we had before." Mmmm, nope, I'll take cash tyvm.

Was supposed to have a meeting with Altaro this morning and those ass hats only will talk via Teams. And Teams Web is disabled. So I got up early for a meeting that it doesn't even let me join because they can't afford an IT to know how to pick a professional tool. It's not like this stuff isn't free. Using Teams internally is pathetic, but whatever. Pushing it as an external tool and blocking the use of it via a web page is unprofessional to the extreme.

Thankfully after a bit of back and forth, the tech involved was willing to hop over to a web based tool and we were able to get into the meeting.

all of your own personal opinions beside - Have you used Teams on the web? It's aweful. I'm not surprised they have to disabled for possibly mutliple reasons - 1) it's aweful, 2) might be a security situation, Administration might not want people sharing Teams with outside entities. (this is only a possibility/Guess)

I might be the only person on ML that doesn't mind Teams.

      I don’t mind it.

I use Teams very heavily. There are things that it could do better. Just like other tools have gaps as well. It is a tool and it does most of what I need it to.

So SAM - what's the generic title for a jack-of-all-trades IT person then?

Who does Systems and Network Administration for a majority of their time.

Yeah, or who just does everything IT - the lone IT person at an SMB.

The old title that seemed to be standard around 2000 when the market was booming was "LAN Admin" - the person who managed all the devices on the LAN but generally ran only a single office. It's a generalist title. I never liked it, but it was standard and never overlapped with any enterprise titles.

I prefer something like IT Admin, IT Generalist, SMB IT Generalist. Admin and Generalist are really the core "type" components that seem to need to be in the name. Nothing that singles out servers, networks or other non-majority job component should exist unless doing that job as the majority.

I could go for IT Admin for @hobbit666. It recognizes that his tasks have administration elements to them, but are general to IT.
