This is interesting as I've been wondering about this sort of thing.

Example, Scott has been discussing with me in another thread about thinking about a LANless setup. Question is how and where do I learn this sort of thinking from. I'm self taught in all areas of IT so I still think in terms of LAN/WAN as that's what I've been doing for 14+ years, but where do you get the ideas and guidance on new ways of thinking? Is it from attending things like Spiceworld or other conferences? Or are there good online resources to see what people are doing and how?

As iron sharpens iron, so does one person sharpen another.

I've learned more from folks like @scottalanmiller in the short time I have interacted with him on here and in Spiceworks than I have the last 10 years I've spent in IT.

The biggest issue with these communities is becoming a monoculture. If any one person or group of people dominates the discussion without room for new ideas and approaches a community becomes part of the problem. This is not a passive aggressive way for me to call someone out, just something for everyone here to be careful of.

Supposedly wasn't hacked. was just reusing password people had else where that were already stolen.

That is the official TV line, but since people with 2FA were compromised it doesn't ring true to me.

This is particularly funny since y'all are here in Colorado. This type of BS is normal ad copy in some places.

@dafyre and @scottalanmiller I agree with your statements regarding the fundamentals. The number of IT pros that I have encountered who do not understand subnetting is disappointing. That being said, I think that the problems start when you leave the basics. Using your example in the OP @scottalanmiller, you had never heard of a given tool that a customer considered normative. I'm running in to this on a nearly daily basis as I transition from Windows Admin to Linux Admin. I have no idea what is normative (other than what is mentioned here and elsewhere), and that is a moving target at best.

    • RE: PowerShell is now open source

This is part of a pattern. First you had the integration of BASH with Windows, then the porting of OpenSSH to Windows, and now Powershell for Linux. Microsoft has realized that there is zero money to be made in client sales, and is trying to become as platform agnostic as possible.

    • RE: New Words That I Am Promoting

Common use doesn't make it a good use of the English language. "Cloud" is one of the more common of the most egregious offenders in this regard. I don't object to making attrition a verb in specific, but in principle. The English language, and its American derivative have been much abused by sales and advertising over the last few decades, and that makes me very resistant to alterations that serve little to no purpose in my opinion.

    • Employment in the Enterprise compared to SMB

I'm in the midst of a search for a new job after fighting some burnout at my current one. One of the possibilities that I have been presented with is some Ops work for a company that rhymes with Pewlett Hackard (E). I have only ever worked in the SMB, and I have enjoyed quite a bit of leeway and freedom. I have enjoyed doing a lot of different things rather than specializing. I'm curious if any of you who have worked in larger organizations would have any feedback on your experiences and what were the pluses and minuses compared to SMB structures (or lack thereof).

Actually, given the comma placement it means that OpenDNS is now part of both Cisco and an entity called Forrester on Ransomware. This is a very confusing line.

    • RE: Resume Critique

One thing that most people who are attracted to IT tend towards is not selling things, i.e. state things at a very fundamental level without embellishment. This is very good when we're talking amongst ourselves. The problem comes in when we have to deal with people outside of IT. You need to highlight your successes and sell yourself. Don't lie, but you need to expand upon why the successes you've had matter. Don't assume that the reader will be able to connect the dots (because they probably won't if they're not in IT).

I don't know if I'd call that opening more of iOS, than redefining some functional elements of the UI.

"...more open than ever" is a very relative statement 🙂

I would try but I'm a newbie here as well. If you see anyone constantly wearing a black under armor sweatshirt and khakis the whole time, that's me.

Is that they only thing that you brought?

      Quick notes:

      • Don't use abbreviations like w/ unless necessary
      • Office 365 licensing platform sounds like you're only good at handling the licensing part of the system. Since you migrated from Exchange to O365 I'm guessing that isn't the case, but I would be clear.
      • Final line of your Jr SysAdmin entry sounds weak. If the items are different from the items above it, I would list out what they are and how they improved uptimes.

You can afford a $4k USD laptop? They look nice, but you're paying a premium for the form factor, and losing quite a bit of heat management.

I'm playing through Jade Empire now (It's a freebie from Origin if you have an account there). So far, I'm enjoying the story. The game play on a PC keyboard isn't bad. The game seems to involve a lot of culture from China, if I understand the story right.

It's a good play so far, with a good story (that's all I really care about, ha ha).

I completely forgot that I snagged that too...

Now the conundrum: keep on with GalCiv III or switch to Jade Empire. Hmmmm

    • RE: How Much and Long Does the A+ Typically Influence IT Hiring?

Fundamentally the A+ only has value as an entry point into the IT industry. It is too expensive and provides little value as learning tool for it to be comparable to other certifications. However, it is perceived to be a usable filter point for businesses hiring entry level people into non programming IT positions. Whether or not it is a good filter point is not really the point. The fact is that the marketplace has this perception, and for an individual seeking to enter into the IT field without other education, experience, or interpersonal connection is immediately at a disadvantage.
