Our Richoh printers have been great for us. We have around 15 mfp's around campus. They have needed virtually no support due to anything breaking down. A couple needed to be reconfigured due to changing departments but that is really it.

RE: Phone systemposted in IT Discussion
@jaredbusch Thanks Jared. I am in process of learning telephony myself because I never want to quit learning. However its not my position so I am just asked for suggestions by my management. I have suggested your company as well as Scott's so they would have options. I don't know if the lady in charge contacted you all or what the results were. I am certainly not an expert as I have only done a couple small jobs, that is why I keep telling her to contact one of you all.
-
RE: Phone systemposted in IT Discussion
@dashrender Yeah I keep making suggestions. I think we would be in a lot better shape financially and feature wise if we used one of you all. I'm not sure where the hold up is with our phone lady and her boss. Hopefully we will get somewhere soon on this.
-
RE: Phone systemposted in IT Discussion
@bigbear Yeah I was thinking it would probably save a lot of money for us to not use a hosted solution. The phone lady says we pay around 20k a year for our legacy cisco system. Even a cloud setup like Eddie does should be doable for us.
Thanks for the info about SwitchVox. Someone else told me that their demo doesnt usually reflect what they are selling. As in, you have to buy a lot more to get what the demo shows. So who knows. I was asked to help again as they did not make a decision last time either.

@s-hackleman I think it matters. We all want our titles to be accurate. i don't blame you a bit. It sounds like developer, integrator, or possibly devops would be more appropriate.

I don't think my school wants to host their pbx software. So for around 300 users who is generally the top provider these days?
-
RE: Phone systemposted in IT Discussion
@dustinb3403 I agree with you totally. I asked what pbx their software is based on and she said Linux centos......
So you can see why I'm suspicious here. I also asked what brand phones they use and they are Digium branded and won't work with other sip phones. Sorry but I highly doubtful that as well.
-
RE: Phone systemposted in IT Discussion
@dustinb3403 ok thanks, that makes sense. I asked the person doing the demo and she did not know about the software. I'll give my recommendation to host since that will be a little cheaper. My school is still going around with this /sigh. Thanks for your input Dustin

Anyone familiar with the Switchvox company and their experience with them? How do they compare with Ring Central or
VoIP.ms? -

@stacksofplates That looks like an excellent way of doing tasks like this. Having that kind of control and options with that few lines is great i think.

Looking at Sharepoint tutorials to see if I could make use of it with my LLC, since I have a one-license subscription to Office 365 Business Premium.
Honestly is a much bigger hastle than its worth. Unless you're putting in manyhundreds of man hours if find a better solution.
That's what I'm seeing. Right now I share OneNote notebooks from OneDrive with students. Trying to do the same kind of thing through Sharepoint doesn't seem like it's worth the effort.
Plus, I have other learning objectives on my plate (RHCSA study), I ought to stay focused.
Ugh, we use OneNote at NTG, it's made me detest MS Office. The drive to OneNote has made me want to ban SharePoint, OneNote, and MS Office entirely. Between OneNote and Exchange I've become convinced that no one using Microsoft Office products does any work.
what points about onenote do you dislike?
Mostly around things being extremely slow, very difficult to organize, cannot link to needed data for sending to other people which makes organization and searching all but impossible, etc. It's just heavy and cumbersome. It encourages way too much media so becomes a crap dumping ground instead of having people put in clean and useful data. And little things like its table formats are just awful.
well i guess it depends on the data you want to put in there. i don't have any of those issues but i just use it for notes and documentation and i am happy with it. it is for notes and documentation. it sounds like note taking software isn't what you need. to me it sounds like you just need to organize a wordpress site for something like that.
what kind of data are you trying to put in there?
IT and customer documentation. OneNote wouldn't be too bad for one user. But for sharing with others, it is really messy.
ok that makes sense. sounds like you just need a custom wordpress site where you use categories for each customer. then you could link to a particular customer or to a certain record of that customer via a post.

After downloading the .ovf file, extracting the vmdk, and converting the vmdk to a vhd or vhdx. When creating a virtual machine for it in Hyper-V, a Generation 2 will not work, you must use a Generation 1 when creating the VM.
I had this problem friday when using SmartDeploy. It won't use generation 2, only generation 1. I have to redo everything now

RE: Is the 3-2-1 rule antiquated?posted in IT Discussion
@mike-davis said in Is the 3-2-1 rule antiquated?:
No, even with a fast internet connection, I would think you would still want onsite backups for fast restores. I guess the exception would be if you had a 1Gb internet connection and your cloud backup could support those speeds.
I agree with Mike here. That is the reason for the rule in the first place. You don';t have to use the cloud but even if you don't you will want something onsite so data can be accessed and restored in a reasonable amount of time. I don't know about others but I always considered my offsite data to be archived or disaster recovery data. As in no reason to pull from there until your current physical location is completely wiped out.

@dustinb3403 said in Is the 3-2-1 rule antiquated?:
In a conversation that I was having today with someone, it was stated that the 3-2-1 rule is "old" or "antiquated".
I immediately said that is wrong, and explained why and how rearranging existing equipment to fit the need isn't a money sink, and only provides more protection than current "modern" (off site backup only solutions) include.
What do you guys think? Is 3-2-1 dead?
While old i see no reason for it to be dead. It is sound advice and can be tweaked for any particular need.

For DSL I have always used what the Telco providers provided. I found it had less issues than a 3rd party.
That's what I was thinking. I've got my own DOCIS 3 modem when we were on Spectrum and that worked great. But I don't know enough about DSL to be confident in purchasing one.
Cable has a very good defined standard so it is easy. I've seen telco's do so many weird things with DSL.
I had an experience in Hazard, KY with a cable operator who dropped business connections all day every day. Blaming it on everything from "someone stole our lines out of the trees for the copper" to the modem not keeping its sync settings. It was wideband and I dont believe anyone in the whole company knew what was going on, lol.
I'm from Kentucky and those folks from hazard and surrounding areas are just different
