The whole crux of my ask was - the desire to buy as few Windows Server CALs as possible.

This is unrelated to the question asked, though.

you know i have noticed you and dash really communicate differently. not good or bad, just different. then you both have trouble understanding the other. from the many threads i have read with you two, that is the common theme i have seen.

I'd assume part of it is that I am highly literal. That tends to be a root of many communications issues for me in general.

yeah i think your right you are literal. i had to adjust my communication with you. that was my fault though, i am used to having to be so unliteral with my users because i would lose them that i got into that bad habit lol. i know for me, i was not explaining my thoughts in a well laid out way and that made me harder to understand and threw you off. did i do better that time?

For DSL I have always used what the Telco providers provided. I found it had less issues than a 3rd party.

That's what I was thinking. I've got my own DOCIS 3 modem when we were on Spectrum and that worked great. But I don't know enough about DSL to be confident in purchasing one.

Cable has a very good defined standard so it is easy. I've seen telco's do so many weird things with DSL.

I had an experience in Hazard, KY with a cable operator who dropped business connections all day every day. Blaming it on everything from "someone stole our lines out of the trees for the copper" to the modem not keeping its sync settings. It was wideband and I dont believe anyone in the whole company knew what was going on, lol.

I'm from Kentucky and those folks from hazard and surrounding areas are just different

@dustinb3403 I agree with you totally. I asked what pbx their software is based on and she said Linux centos......

So you can see why I'm suspicious here. I also asked what brand phones they use and they are Digium branded and won't work with other sip phones. Sorry but I highly doubtful that as well.

    • RE: Phone system

@bigbear Yeah I was thinking it would probably save a lot of money for us to not use a hosted solution. The phone lady says we pay around 20k a year for our legacy cisco system. Even a cloud setup like Eddie does should be doable for us.

Thanks for the info about SwitchVox. Someone else told me that their demo doesnt usually reflect what they are selling. As in, you have to buy a lot more to get what the demo shows. So who knows. I was asked to help again as they did not make a decision last time either.

@dashrender Yeah I keep making suggestions. I think we would be in a lot better shape financially and feature wise if we used one of you all. I'm not sure where the hold up is with our phone lady and her boss. Hopefully we will get somewhere soon on this.

@jaredbusch Thanks Jared. I am in process of learning telephony myself because I never want to quit learning. However its not my position so I am just asked for suggestions by my management. I have suggested your company as well as Scott's so they would have options. I don't know if the lady in charge contacted you all or what the results were. I am certainly not an expert as I have only done a couple small jobs, that is why I keep telling her to contact one of you all.

@scottalanmiller Well we are getting demos of phone .... mobile apps.

You only need demos of those things for systems that are proprietary and don't let you choose what you want. Nothing wrong with a demo or features, but "use anything you want" is the best demo. Basically, the demos you are seeing are demonstrations of limitations, not of features. For open systems, there isn't really anything like that to demo in the first place.

99% of SMB don't want this. They want a solution. great it's open - now - what should I use to get mobile access? They expect an answer - not, anything you want.

I don't believe that. I think they just buy that because they turn to sales people willing to gouge them and they don't bother actually doing some basic research to see how phones work. I think 99% of SMBs would avoid this if they understood what they were buying.

They don't ACTUALLY want to get ripped off, they just don't want to "think about it" and get ripped off as a byproduct. There is a difference between wanting to be lazy and hoping that you can be lazy AND get a good deal. It's not realistic, but desiring to be lazy doesn't actually mean that they want a bad deal.

      AGREE!

@scottalanmiller Ok I have to mention this then since you brought that up. During our SwitchVox demo the saleslady said their phones were Digium branded phones. I then asked who made them since it was kind of implied that they did not since she used the word "branded". I honestly did not know the answer and is why I was asking. She said they did. I then said, so you manufacture and sell your own phones, really? She said yes. I said no more questions. Btw my first question was what their software pbx was based on and she said Linux centos. Not some sort of pbx like freepbx or asterisk, no, it was definitely linux centos she said!
