    • RE: Wi-Fi calling?

      @Pete-S said in Wi-Fi calling?:

I did some more research and it turns out that WiFi calling is using some familiar protocols but it's not the same as VoIP using SIP/RTP.

Actually another name for Wi-Fi Calling is the more official VoWiFi.
It's using a protocol called GAN (Generic Access Network) that is based on IMS, IPsec and ePDG. And IMS is using SIP for signaling.

Basically it's a way of sending the same packets that would go over the cell network over internet instead. It uses the SIM card for security and authentication. It's data is encapsulated in an IPsec tunnel - which is why it only works if IPsec ports and packets are allowed in the firewall.

Related technology that works in a very similar way is VoLTE, which is Voice over the 4G/LTE network.

Did you happen to learn if it uses the SS7 network? It would be very intersting if VoWiFi avoided the SS7.

Thank you all for the input. I'm trying to decide between the PEPWAVE and the Netgear. The Netgear has some bad reviews, but your remarks will keep it in the list to explore. I'll let you know how it works out for us when I get one in and test it.

Or just one underground... my office basement is a black whole for signals.

When I go down, I go all the way down. !

@notverypunny is right. I leave it turned on all the time. I find that I am talking on WiFi quite often. It works great when were are in old churches with 36 inch thick stone walls, and there is no chance of cellular connectivity, or three or four flights underground. 🙂

We had the same problem with VitalPBX, and @ScottAlanMiller's suggestion, we made the Opus codec the highest priority and it resolved the issue for us. Maybe it is worth a try for you?

    • 4g or 5g LTE cellular modem options?

I have a customer that wants the ability to have cellular failover for (for a few PCs on their LAN) 6 days per year. Two 3 day chunks.

I am looking for a good 4g or 5g cellular modem that I can connect to WAN2 on our router. We have outstanding 4g in the area.

Have any of you ever used such a beast or are you familiar with them?

Looking for thoughts based on experience.

      Thanks.

I just found this. I guess it is called "Camp" or "Call Back"

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_callback

Not I can start researching how to do it with VitalPBX.

The conversation here, on this topic was instrumental in getting me on the right path for a solution. Thank you all!
We can keep talking about it too, if you want 🙂

@Dashrender said in Yealink Feature needed. Not sure what to call it.:

      No...

      let's start over.

Dustin is on the phone, Jason calls him. Jason presses a button on his phone that enacts a process that WHEN Dustin hangs up, Jason's phone will beep letting Jason know Dustin is now off the phone.

that's all - there's no request for a BLF anywhere...

now it would make sense for the button that Jason pressed on his phone to lightup basically showing that Dustin's line is active - until he hangs up.. then the button would be assigned to nothing.

And since we already have BLF buttons for these people ( or most of them ) It would be fine if this feature were activated by pressing the BLF button, else, we'll need two buttons per person.

@Dashrender said in Yealink Feature needed. Not sure what to call it.:

but what happens if you leave your phone before they hang up? now they are calling back an empty desk.

It wouldn't initiate a call, it would just ring or chirp your phone so you would know they hung up.

Their old internal PBX had this and they miss the feature.

@Dashrender said in Yealink Feature needed. Not sure what to call it.:

because I frequently forget what I called for in the first place by the time they call me back.

I like this part! I can relate!

    • Yealink Feature needed. Not sure what to call it.

When I need to speak with someone who is currently on a call, I would like to get an audible signal on my phone when they hang up the call. I suspect this is attached to BLF, and I know Yealink has "Audio Alert for BLF Pickup", but I need an audio alert for blf hang up, and I would like it to be only after I select their blf button.

Is this going to be a Busy/Ringback event? or a Transfer event? or something else.

I'm happy to search for it, I just don't know what to call it.

    • RE: cPanel Price Increase

@dave_c said in cPanel Price Increase:

The price was announced some time ago and this is the first month it has been applied. I am absorbing the price difference and moving out of cPanel. I actually started the move a few months ago but moving out has not been easy for non-technical reasons.

Interworx is well know. I know many hosters are moving to DirectAdmin .

Thanks. I appreciate these comments. My host does not support DirectAdmin, but I'll still give them a look. Glad to hear you were aware of Interworx, I had not heard of them before.

    • cPanel Price Increase

Our VPS host just sent an e-mail about cPanel pricing model changes that may result in huge increases for some hosting providers.

They are offering an alternative to cPanel called Interworx. they say Interworx has been around for 20 years and they now own them.

Here is their link to a comparison chart:
      https://www.liquidweb.com/kb/comparison-of-the-four-major-server-control-panels/

and here is a link to their new pricing structure:
      https://www.liquidweb.com/kb/pricing-breakdown/

Have any of you been down this road yet? What did you do, if anything? Do you have any experience with Interworx you can share?

      Thanks for you comments.

    • RE: Exchange 2016 - NDR

In your scenario, SPF is your friend in most cases. Normally, people will tell you SPF is a waste of your time. I'm not going to argue all the various ways to use SPF and how they may or may not help.

I will say that in your case, you do want the people who need to know; to get an NDR.

So, adopt this policy: Do not send NDR if SPF check fails.

The reason this is good in your case is that if SPF passes, you (likely) have a valid sender that should get the NDR. If it fails, you will more often than not, have a sender that is not real. Not always, but way more often then never. And if your choices are to NDR or not to NDR, I would go for the unspoken third option, NDR when it will most often be helpful and not cause too much backscatter.

There are examples where even this is not the golden egg, but it is sure better than skipping your customers, vendors, friends, family, etc when they do have a valid SPF and you can demonstrate there is a high probability the message is not spam.

@garak0410 You're doing fine. It sounds like you have access to the property while they are out of town. I would say if you don't get that pepwave re-configured to use the Ethernet wan by Saturday afternoon, I'd get a regular router and make sure he has his internet and WiFi back by the time he rolls in Sunday night..... You got this, just know when to fall back on plan "b".
