I was asked to write a job description for them to use for recruitment.

And of course you declined. ESPECIALLY since you have stated they have an HR department. This is their job,

    • RE: How do you guys handle counter offers?

As someone who is intimately familiar with both side of that issue, I have just a few thoughts.

1st, you went to the interview because you were unhappy where you are.

2nd, if you went straight to a 50% pay increase to stay; we now know there are problems that are are not pay related at this job. As does the employer, and he has decided not to correct them, he is only trying to get you to stay long enough to fire you on his terms.

3rd, As Scott said, you may burn the bridge to the man who has faith in you today.

4th, if you leave on cordial terms, there is no reason why you couldn't come back in a few years for that 50% pay increase, but as I said earlier, the money isn't the issue, there is another problem, and I'm sure the current boss has no desire to fix it.

As an employer, I NEVER EVER make a counter offer or ask what it would take to get someone to stay. If they are leaving, and we agree to terms to make them stay, it is all but guaranteed you are only keeping them for a short while. They will leave anyway once they realize your new arrangement can't resolve the real problem.

Thank them for the offer and tell them if they have a place in the future that will help you grow in your skills and value, you would be willing to talk then. Be polite, and gracious. Burned bridges are condemned in your world!

    • RE: Best Plex player to use with a non smart tv or as a portable HDMI player?

@NashBrydges I looked at these. The Rokus do not present themselves as a mobile device, so this means I cannot use the Plex SYNC feature. This wouldn't really be that bad if it had internal storage it can play from. Managing everything from Plex would be nice, but I wouldn't mind copying stuff to an SD card or USB stick if I needed to.

Do you know if any of the Rokus can play from local storage while offline?

Plugging it in to the HDMI input in the car is appealing too. So that means I would need a Plex Media Player that can play media on internal and usb storage. Sadly, this rules out the Apple TV 4K which I nearly bought 5 minutes ago.... 😞

@RojoLoco Thanks. I have an app on my phone called Unified Remote. https://www.facebook.com/UnifiedRemote/
that I really like, but it is still a drag to move around a windows desktop with anything other than a mouse.

I move through apps and menus really easy with all my remotes: XFinity, Samsung, Apple TV, etc.

Also, When it comes to my wife and kids, I think a dedicated Plex player that just appears when they change the HDMI input is a better choice in my house.

I look forward to seeing what you have.

I have non-smart TV and I am tired of using the keyboard on my lap with a windows pc running the plex media player to watch shows. My Apple TV is too old to install the Plex app on it.

I am wondering what you might suggest as a dedicated plex media player with HDMI out. Preferably a TV style remote control rather than a keyboard.

Looking now. I must be missing something, though. Because it looks like for my personal user it is $750/mo which seems, well, absolutely insane.

      https://forestry.io/pricing/

Because of the features you need? I didn't look at the pricing until now. The free version won't work? I don;t know your use case, knowing you, you may need the pro version.... 🙂

    • Thank you!

I just wanted to say "thank you" to everyone who posts here. Your topics are very often educational and thought provoking.

As an example, I have spent some time in the last few days quietly learning what Runbook Automation is, thanks to Is there a use case for Azure Automation Runbooks?

It turns out we use RBA, I just didn't know its name or how many places it is used in our daily IT lives.

      Thanks!

So two PCs and two RIFT S in one room would make for a sweet setup for two kids?

If anything - create a new VLAN - and put those 10 busted iPhones on that VLAN and have Windows serve DHCP to them (you'll need a new WiFi SSID for that new VLAN too.

That's my goal. Which brings us back to the OP. Trying to get Windows to provide DHCP to a VLAN. I'm actually digging back into that right now after a long day of fixing Windows update problems on a bunch of 2008R2 and 2012 servers. 😞

what model are those iPhones? sure it's not just a phone issue?
Wireshark should be able to tell if the DHCP request is even coming in.

Not sure, and I'm sure it is. But it's one of those situations that we have to overcome or work around. This is a group the believes if it says Apple, it cannot be at fault.

I want to get the Windows Server to serve DHCP to 10 iphones with my 10 spare Device CALs. So I am back to the Windows Server DHCP assigning address on VLAN 10.

If I can make this work, I'll prove them with a new DHCP only server.

I'm down to the last 5 days to make this work.....

    • Rough morning with Windows Updates on Servers.

No common denominator yet, other than they are all windows servers 2008R2 and 2012.

We came in today to more than 10 servers stuck in update loops at 10 different customers. The loops went on for hours until they finally reached Update 5 of 5 and then reverted themselves.

Two of them required interrupting the startup and choosing safe mode, to nudge it along.

      I need a nap!

      @JaredBusch and @scottalanmiller

This is a super interesting topic. I am now looking at the RIFT S for each of the kids for Christmas.

I understand I would need two VR HMDs and two computers. But I have been unable to find the answer to two more questions:

Can they play co-op or H2H on a LAN, rather than an online-server?

And will two (or more) (rift s) work in the same room without interfering with each other.

I know you may not be exploring the Rift S, but if you have, I'm curious how far along you are on your research and what you have discovered.
