RE: Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play
@bbiAngie said in Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play:
I bought Dying Light last weekend and it has been a TON of fun playing. I typically suck at 1st person games but this one has been easy to adapt to. Plus, slashing zombies with a machete is awesome! I have a few other games I bounce between too. Cities: Skyline, Atlantica Online, Diablo3, and Minecraft.
Have you installed the DLC? Mashing zombies while driving a buggie one of the funnest things ever.

It's kinda simple. You're building a team. Do you pick people looking for a paycheck, or people with a passion about what you're doing? If you have the option, you're looking for passion... or you shouldn't be the one doing the hiring.
once again passion shouldn't be determined on if they do stuff outside of working hours. I work to get a paycheck yes, but I also show passion for my job while doing so.
@david-wiese -- The difference between the way you work and the way someone with a home lab works could an example like this: I have a home lab, and have setup several VMs, to run this, that and the other, and I talk about that in my interview.
You talk about past projects you've done at your current or previous employer...Yes, you may have the enthusiasm, and passion for it. But because it's all done on the clock, it may come across as you just doing your job and nothing more.
However, since I set everything up in my home lab, and have done it in my own personal time since it is my hobby as well as a source of income, may have a better chance in this type of job interview, because of my obvious passion for learning and doing.
You may be a great and passionate / enthusiastic worker, but because you don't have your own home lab, it can be hard for others to see your passion. (keeping in mind that home lab can be a Desktop + Virtualbox, no need for a basement datacenter!).
Honestly, I never ran i to that issue when on interviews for contracts. Interviewer would ask me if I am familiar with such and such concept...and I'll hit them with an example.
"I built a Citrix Farm and then integrated it with RSA Secure ID."
"I wrote a powershell script that migrates users home directories from a 2003 box to a Windows 2012 File Share....complete with logging, remote management, and easy to read code."
"I built a standard image for ten thousand pcs and then deployed them to the departments over night and on weekend."
"I used PS App Deploy to package apps for ScCM but liked having everything wrapped into an executable that anclient cannot just willy nilly open, so I stuck with Wise Packaging."Depends on the interviewer really.
I can see the pros and cons of asking/not asking a candidate if they have a home lab.

There were some really potent Margaritas last night and a few beers but not even close to @scottalanmiller's version of heavy drinking.
But it really was a LONG day.
That Margarita got to me!!! Haha

Speaking of lab stuff: After my boss gets back next week, I will probably have a couple big (and very very heavy) Dell 2900 towers to get rid of. They were former lab systems for us. I know one has 16GB ram in it, no idea what the other one has, either 160 or 250GB drives and PERC raid card (might be real raid cards not sure) if anyone is interested let me know otherwise probably off to the scrap heap. note these are VERY HEAVY TOWERS so would be local pickup in Buffalo NY not going to ship. Again have to check with the boss first to make sure its OK (company gets really weird about giving stuff away for some reason). Just want to put it out there
Man wish i lived closer....

Simple to use, note capabilities, wiki or FAQ kind of feature would be great also.
What do you consider simple to use??? One ticket per page or see them all at once.
"Have you tried turning it off and back on again?"
"Is the power light on?" -

@DustinB3403 SW does this. If certain keywords are entered into the ticket, it will pop up a list of articles on your KB that list those keywords.
Kaseya is also very robust in terms of documentation.
Takes a few hours to learn, though.

RE: HelpDesk Ticketing System
I want something simple to use, something that shows at a glance what is priority to work on, something that can be hooked up to monitoring software (to auto generate tickets when issues arise), and should be able to store Wiki/FAQ/Resolutions in a quick, easy to understand and search format.

I actually have been looking at windows tablets for our sales and tech support departments. We are currently demoing the hp elite x2, i was not impressed by the surface 4.
What about the Lenovo Yoga tablets?

Over all I am not impressed with the Surface line at all. It's not a great tablet or laptop....
I have an IPad Pro however and LOVE IT. So easy to use. The Apple Pencil is pretty awesome too.
I was considering getting a Microsoft Book or Surface, I'm glad I changed my mind and held off for a bit. The hinge issues the Book had, ad the issues the surface has would just tick me off.
LOL yeah with these kinds of honest reviews I wll wait to get one. Question, was this the Surface 4 you used? or another iteration? -

It's really sad because it had the potential for being really cool. We use it as a test machine for one of our clients. I don't use it for anything else as it is just annoying.
Wow, had no idea it was that lackluster. Thanks for sharing!

Made some warehouse management software when I was 14, during summer holiday
Man! Is it still in use to this day? Did you continue doing software development?

Was the receptionist for Digital Computer Corporation and hung out with the Helpdesk team a lot. Started learning how to do bench services and basic office troubleshooting.
That's cool! I have an office services bg/copy boy kinda thing. Never imagined to be working in IT 8 years later

I was a file clerk for a local car dealership, and happened to be answering an IT related question as the IT administrator was walking in.
Was given a job in that department the following day.
Same here! Came from office services/copy boy background.
How I miss the whireof the Xerox sometimes....

@DustinB3403 said in What was your FIRST IT job? And how did you get it?:
The question was a rather simple one;
"What's the difference if I leave it open and click the minimize button versus closing it?"
Oh lawd, had a number of those thrown at me while working at the law firm
