RE: IT Survey: Preemptive Drive Replacement in RAID Arrays
I guess the better way to have said that statement Scott is that they don't understand the additional risk they are putting the system into, by replacing a drive, to replace it as a way to avoid a failed array.
But by replacing the drive, they are putting more stress on the array to rebuild the new drive. And even more and more as they go down the line replacing each drive in the array. Until their on new spinning rust.

@scottalanmiller Oh I completely agree, and said something very similar to that analogy when I heard this.

RE: August 27, 2015 Outage
That would explain why I was getting a 504 error this morning, which started to change after a refresh a few minutes later.
Well glad it at least resulted in something beneficial.

RE: hyper-V in desktop machine (core 2 Deo 2 GB Ram and 250 GB in HD)
Pretty much every Hypervisor is going to consume at least 2 GB of memory.
Without going out and searching for the minimum my self. But 2GB isn't really much at all.
Granted it is on your system though.

RE: Security NVR Recommendation
I'd buy any DVR that matches the camera type that want.
And then buy the camera's separate. Any basic unit that you'd buy from Amazon are going to have crap camera's.
All you need is the software and storage space.
If you don't want to purchase a prebuilt system you could try something line ZoneMinder, and simply purchase camera's that are on the HAL.

To follow up, I've never performed it either. But have heard people say that they replace their drives to avoid the urgent rush of a RAID being depreciated, because of a failed drive.
Wouldn't it be just as good to have a cold spare on a shelf waiting for a failure?
I absolutely agree that having a spare drive on the shelf is more effective, than replacing a drive even if it hasn't failed.
Some people simply don't want to understand what has to be performed to rebuild the array when you replace drives just to replace them.

RE: IT Survey: Preemptive Drive Replacement in RAID Arrays
I don't understand the rational either.

RE: Enterprise 2 Drive USB Storage Devices
It completely threw me for a minute as I'm building installers for it, and reading Skype for Business, is called Lync when you want to use the Click2Run installer.
Completely thrown.
I had to check in several different documents to make sure I wasn't looking at some out of date info.

RE: Understanding RAID 5 with SSD (Solid State Drives)
@Carnival-Boy Only if you're using SSD's.
If your running a classic hard drive(spinning rust) go with RAID 10.
Maybe if the price of SSDs come down even more would RAID 10 be viable for use with SSDs

RE: IT Survey: Preemptive Drive Replacement in RAID Arrays
I've heard of doing it every 2 - 3 years, but not as a part of routine maintenance.
What is schedule for routine maintenance with where you heard this?

RE: Speak to Manager after giving Resignation Letter

I'm not sure any of us outside of India could answer that. In the US they might fire you immediately, but that forces them to pay unemployment so rarely do they want to do that. It's really a question about legal issues and protections in India.
Wait, what? How can you be fired when you just resigned? I suppose if your resignation letter says you resign as of some future time, then they could still technically fire you...
Now that said, if you resign stating that you will work for two additional weeks (normally to allow them a bit of time to find a replacement, etc) it's not uncommon for them to say, nah, you're not working any more after now. But I don't consider that being fired.
It's a matter of system security in most cases. Which most resignations in the US have a 2 week notice provided to them.
The employer doesn't want anyone on premise if they are leaving, even if on good terms because of the "Who know what they might do" question.

Skype for Business (with the click 2 run installer) is still called Lync in all of their coding ..
Its weird.

Here's a description of PV Drivers and why they should be used.

RE: hyper-V in desktop machine (core 2 Deo 2 GB Ram and 250 GB in HD)
pfsense is a linux distro.
I haven't heard of any compatibility issues with it, and XenServer. I would expect more issues with Hyper-V and pfsense more than anything else.
But the Hypervisor shouldn't care what the ISO is. It just gets run as a machine, within another machine.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
For anyone else looking for some simple reading, I've drafted the different articles into a 16 page PDF.
It can be found here, it's rather simple to review and formatting was done for simplicity.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Working on drafting them into a well formatted pdf now.
Granted it's 15 pages to read though, but I can cut that down with text formatting.
