Looks like Google is doing everything they can do to kill application passwords.

I just checked another account that's never used one, and the option is no longer available.

On the phone with Zoho Support who have told me that if you bundle their services, you lose support. WTF. Complete fail. I'm a pretty big Zoho fan but this is INSANE.

WHAT?? Did you bundle them with a different company? If so, then like MS when you buy an OEM - the OEM is who has to provide support, that could make sense... but if bundling only with their own stuff.. nope, makes no sense.

Model numbers for the monitors mentioned above:

      Dell 27 Video Conferencing Monitor - C2722DE ~ $700

      Dell 24 Video Conferencing Monitor - C2423H ~ $450

The 24 doesn't seem that bad, assuming the camera and mic are good. But that seems like one hell of an upcharge for the 27

Our new setup includes 2 different models of Dell's video conferencing monitors. Built in camera (pops up from the top edge), as well as a decent array of mics and speakers below the display. I think management didn't really think it through, as our office is mostly cubicles. 2 or more people on a call turns into a weird, multi-node speakerphone, complete with odd echoes that come from both latency and physical distance. They probably would be great if everyone had them at home, but it's not really a practical solution if you have a budget.

      Or practical in cubes....

IMHO it's unprofessional and much better to use a real transactional email service for these kinds of applications.

Our users mainly use laptops with built in camera/mics.

Those who need better audio use a headset.

Our docking station setup uses whatever webcam we could find during the pandemic (might be time to look at better ones) and a headset.

First the command itself, showing gmail settings here by default but obviously fill in with your own details:

Does it work? I thought gmail required OAuth nowadays and you couldn't use plain username & password for authentication anymore.

gmail still allows the creation of app passwords.

no - they don't print from their phones.

I have no idea why they want to be there - other than - I'm an owner.

Ask them to explain the perceived benefit so that you can address the issue.

Yeah - I'm waiting for my boss's time at the moment for just that.

IT's still how 90% of business does it. Marketing aside, cloud isn't the majorit of workloads, and the majority of cloud is replicating legacy workloads.

That part definitely seems to be true 😉

I'm gonna play devils advocate here, and say it's a complete waste of time to build a hardware lab. If you want to work SMB for 100 employee company, then fine whatever. They want to pay you to monkey around with hardware for a few servers instead of doing Colo or cloud.

Everyone on here giving the advice is passionate about their work and thorough, but unless you want to do IT service work or be one man IT shop, there isn't really any value in this stuff. Get an edge router and buy a cheap hardware device as @Pete-S recommended.

I actually had to check the date a few times on this thread and make sure it wasn't nearly a decade old. Because man this is dated way to learn. You'll find very little of what you want to learn, has to do with hardware or even a specific Colo or cloud. Notice how everyone talked about sever configuration or networking. Neither of those pertain to actual hardware. The implementation you'll be doing in the real world is both hardware and cloud agnostic.

This is why I mentioned going the Vultr route. While there could be some savings in setting up a dozen VMs on a local VM host at his house - it's not accessing like a business generally does anymore - as IRL is mentioning.

    • wifi for unmanaged devices

We have a corporate WiFi and a guest WiFi network.

The owners keep asking to put their personal phones on the corporate WiFi - The only thing this could gain them is access to the printers to print from their phones, but it's not something they have ever done.

Am I just dieing on a hill for no reason wanting them to put their personal devices on the guest WiFi?

Great video. Thanks for that. Your assumption is correct. There are no PCs or servers on this network, just other networking equipment. I like the idea of the Pi and Mesh Central. I finally was able to find one and have it on order. Time to setup a mesh central vm.

I also found this as an option as well https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082VVCFNG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Not too badly priced either. But I am going with the Pi.

I'm leery about anything running a Celeron J or N series CPU, a Pi is probably going to perform better.

Actually they are probably faster than the Pi. But I like the Pi more.

Not in my experience, but I've also never run Windows on a Pi.

If you run a lean Debian similar to what RP has that people typically run on an RP4 on the Celerons, it's .... similar.

Right - why would you run windows on this? just because it's Intel? Run some 'nix thing like you would on the RPi and it should be faster than the RPi.

Why put a device on the network?

If you're going for MC anyway - you could just install MC on just about everything in the network.

Though for things like switches/routers, the RPi could be nice if you don't have a server or something already onsite you could remote into.

I'm sure their desktop environment is Windows for their non techies.

That's weird as that is a power user platform. You'd never put that in to make things harder jsut for the less capable staff if you don't for the good staff. But that's not really relevant, why would their applications be getting built on Windows regardless of that? And even if they were BUILT on Windows, why would the app deployment happen to Windows? What is used by some non-dev staff has zero to do with what is talking to their system.s

You're asking people to do things your way - we all know that's not the typical way.

As for your learning - physical hardware is really mainly good for learning hypervisors, beyond that you could do everything in a VPS provider like Vultr

Well, why use Vultr with the monthly costs when you could learn it ON the hypervisor you are also learning on the bare metal?

Of course - if you have the hardware, then sure, if you don't...
