Pertino and RDS in my opinion. I really do not think VPN is ever easier.

Maybe not, but Pertino has a monthly reoccurring cost. If you already have VPN in place it costs nothing to use.

This is exactly what I do today.
But considering i have a LMI Central account I am going to setup my few (5 or 6) users with LMI accounts under my Central account and give them access to their desktops. This will be much simpler than the VPN solution, since they don't need any of the other features of the VPN portion (like direct access to the servers or files, etc)

Do you mean that you would expect people to remote into their desktops at their office using something like Pertino or Logmein?

Well Pertino is a VPN, not a remote access technology. But Remote Desktop, LogMeIn, PCoIP, NX, 2X, XenApp, etc. Same way that they access Amazon Workspaces or any VDI/RDS.

That's how Wall St. firms do it, for example. They do the cost analysis and know that because they own the desktop already it is cheaper to have people remote to those rather than have RDS too.

Good to know I've been doing the same as the big wall street guys... hey wait.... lol

How are you using the softphones on Pertino if it can't connect to the CentOS 5 box?

Or are you saying simply that the softphones already have Pertino integrated into it's software (or that since Pertino is on the computer you're using, the softphone will just use it)?

As far as Spiceworks is concerned, why are you using relaying? I have an account setup on my Exchange server that SW logs into just like my outlook clients do.

It is logging in now, I was thinking to change that. I do not need to keep an O365 mailbox just for a product that I only use a little.

I thought you could have service accounts with O365? no?

I don't, can't. i have a family and in Germany the system for retirement is different, you are required, by law to pay into retirement, the more the better, but yeah, its a different system, and i don't have money i can lose.

We do both here. We have to pay some into SS. Then we "have" to use things like 401K (insane if you don't.) Then extra you put wherever you want.

Insane if you don't as long as the employer is offering any type of matching.

I opened this thread excited, until I saw the USB part of your post. 😞 I need a 4 bay NAS device for slow storage of medical images. I could get away with a two drive RAID 1 setup, but I like the idea of the expansion.

But really expensive compared to alternatives, like having a desktop 🙂

Unless you're really concerned about keeping things in house, I don't understand deploying VDI due to cost factors alone.

OK, I had a misunderstanding (I knew that POP3 didn't send) about IMAP. I thought it took care of both directions.

By definition, email only exists as SMTP. Any other protocol involved, POP, IMAP, Exchange, etc. is a "mailbox management" protocol. They are used for manipulating email after it has been received. All sending of email is always SMTP and that will never change because it is the use of SMTP that defines something as email.

OK.. Ha, I guess I can go home I've learned my thing for the day. 🙂

If you are worried about governments locking weapons of people they don't want to be armed, do you not think that they would not unlock those that they want armed? Or just hackers in general.

The government would allow those it wants to have guns to have them without this idiotic safety. It wouldn't be worth the risk of malfunction to give these to, say, Cops or military personal.

Assuming that O365 can doing SMTP/POP3 - your copiers/mopiers should be able to do the same (if you're lucky the device will use IMAP).

POP3 and IMAP cannot send email, they can only receive. Thinks like Copiers can only use SMTP since they only send mail. And they rarely support the range of security necessary to use Office 365 or any secured Exchange system. So a relay is normally necessary.

OK, I had a misunderstanding (I knew that POP3 didn't send) about IMAP. I thought it took care of both directions.

I have to guess by your answer Apache - but I didn't install it intentionally. Either it was auto installed, or MediaWiki installed it during it's setup.

It's not installed by default in CentOS but if you do "yum install mediawiki" them it installs all requirements, that's the magic of Linux. So Apache, PHP, MySQL and other components are all downloaded and installed automatically because MediaWiki needs them.

      Well that explains it.

I figured a wiki was the easiest thing to edit on a regular basis.

You are correct that that is the easiest to edit and if she wants just text without looking nice, MediaWiki will do that. But if you want it to look nice and be friendly for end users, MediaWiki is probably not the tool of choice.

Do they not have Windows servers? If they do, Sharepoint is, without a doubt, the best answer.

I think you know that we have Windows servers - 🙂
on a side note, I went with a Linux option for three reasons; 1-separation of duties which leads to, 2-licensing costs and 3-it gives me a Linux server to learn how to take care of.

True, but who would want to do that? Some crazy person who knows that some idiot allows their kid to play with their 'safety gun' and the bullets so that an accident will happen... LOL (yes I know it's not really funny - but the ludicrousness of it makes me laugh).

What is he expecting? It looks exactly like WikiPedia because that's what code it is. You add themes or design your own to make it look different. Wikis are generally very ugly (Sharepoint being an obvious exception.) You can make them look nice (ish) but that's a ton more work than just installing. Installing again won't change the look 🙂
