Yep, that should do you just fine.

Now the question is - what are you going to use to terminal connect to the com port? Windows used to have a TTY session on it - back when modems were common, but I think that was dropped ages ago.

You can you PUTTY, that's probably the easiest way to go.

If you want to hassle with WSL, you can follow these instructions to get a terminal that will connect to the com port.

    • Web trackers using CNAME to bypass anti tracking

      Have you guys seen this?

      https://www.theregister.com/2021/03/04/adguard_cname_tracker/

AdGuard on Thursday published a list of more than 6,000 CNAME-based trackers so they can be incorporated into content-blocking filters.

CNAME tracking is a way to configure DNS records to erase the distinction between code and assets from a publisher's (first-party) domain and tracking scripts on that site that call a server on an advertiser's (third-party) domain. Such domain cloaking – obscuring who controls a domain – undoes privacy defenses, like the blocking of third-party cookies, by making third-party assets look like they're associated with the first-party domain.

This blurb doesn't do this issue justice. Because of the use of CNAMEs, the third parties now appear to be a first party subdomain, as such our browser sends them our session cookies for the sites in question.

This is a pretty scary security issue in my opinion.

@dafyre said in Raspberry Pi-based KVM over IP:

I like the idea of something like this. I admit that some of the points (such as powering the device) are good ones.

I think something like this could be huge for the team I work on. We do have to go physically visit the servers every now and again to fix a botched VMware upgrade (rare, but it happens) or what-have you. Having something like this would be great. Connect the PiKVM to wireless so we don't have to dig out a monitor, mouse, keyboard, and power cable and find something to sit it on.

We then could go back to the admin machines (or back to our office!) and connect to the PiKVM over wireless. No muss, no fuss.

Couldn't you power the PiKVM with battery, or via the USB connection that it uses to connect up for the keyboard & mouse as well. OR a second USB connection for power instead.

If available, you can run a pi with a PoE to 5v usb adapter. I had a rPI3 B+ that I used that way for a long time. That's assuming you have a network port to provide the power.

The disadvantage to useing iDRAC / iLO, etc al, in our case is that we just don't have enough network ports to do that. Plus iLO & iDRAC are all 1gig connections and all of our switches are 10gig.

10gb network switches should all work at 1gb as well. Now the not enough network ports is at least understandable.

Is it though? Presumably critical infrastructure.. and you can't buy an additional switch to get iLo online?

Removing the update didn't work for us. Still getting blank labels. Monday I'll check if that software from that article is a working version of DYMO Connect.

They've had a working version of the DYMO LabelWriter software out, but that doesn't provide an API that a website can use to print labels with, which is what this client uses the printers for.

The uninstall has worked the the crappy new version Dymo has...

That said, version 8.x is the only version that works with our software,

Did you uninstall the "faulty" update first?
Also did you get the fix one from Windows update or a standalone download?

err... I can't recall if the faulty update was removed first. From what I can tell, you're not supposed to need to remove it though.

As for where did I get it? It came from Windows Update.

management has said hell no to Libre Office for replacing MS Office

I have yet to see a business using Libre Office.

I think a greenfield setup could go that direction pretty easily - as long as they aren't receiving a ton of MS based documents that wind up with formatting issues.

In my case we have 100's or more Word and Excel files, the Word files all would have had to been updated to be formatted correctly - no thanks.
and for us, we're on the verge of moving to O365, so our need for local Office is hopefully short lived except for a few corporate type jobs (accounting). Everyone else should easily be able to use the online versions of Word/Excel.

And isn't that the case for most? How many people today really need a locally installed version of office? 1%? 5%? I know I can do 99.9% of my things in Excel online (I have started using pivot tables a lot - I guess I should check that).

Additionally - I've really taken to the thinking that office documents should RARELY be shared between companies. Most of them should be output to a PDF and sent that way. It frustrates me to no end when vendors send invoices in docx format or xlsx format. - Come on guys... I can edit these files and send them back and you might not even see my changes for that invoice - just WTF?

@Dashrender said in One man IT shop looking for additional help options when needed. Hire a MSP?:

An MSP might not be what you want, but an ITSP (IT Service Provider) should definitely cover the bill.

An MSP is the one thing you absolutely do not want.
ITSP is where you a want to be.

We have a whole thread on here someplace about this.

By pure verbiage I agree, but there are some MSPs out there that likely could work within the confines of the OPs request.

Then they are not an MSP.

We know - but that doesn't keep them from calling themselves a MSP - we see people using the wrong terms ALL THE TIME.

You can edit most pdfs also unless they flatten them. That aspect doesn't really change much.

Of course this is true, but normals, even normal office workers don't know that.
you can often even "edit" them in Word, by importing them, edit then save as PDF, but it's highly likely you'll break the formatting.

But more to your point - I suppose we need a more indelible solution that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

This has been happening for a while now.

      Windows 10 Pro 1903-20H2

      MicroSIP 3.20.1 - 3.20.4

Clients will randomly have their microsip.ini file reset to default. I have no idea why or how.

I'm using the portable version of microsip.

When there's an update - the user is prompted. If they say yes, they are simply brought to the download website page. No chance my users know what to do from here, so no, it's not getting updated.
Also, I've updated several myself, and the update never overwrites the ini file.

OK OK OK - before JB jumps on me - that's not exactly what you said, but the details are pretty light.

On 4 of our sites, we have fileservers that are registered as NC users, and their NC folders are shared in local LANs.

Is the expectation of these 4 sites to use the files in an online state? Is the setup this way because of need/desire for faster access?

I forget off the top of my head which device it is,

The UniFi Access system consists of four elements:

UA Controller: The control center for your Access system, hosted on the UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro). Your UA controller is easily upgradable and offers a host of features that simplify access policymaking as well as personnel, space, and device management.

UA-Hub: A secure I/O hub that authenticates inputs registered by your Access readers (UA-Pro & UA-Lite), push buttons, and sensors. Your UA Hub can also control door locks, alarms, and motorized door openers.

UA-Pro and UA-Lite: The Access system's card or motion reading devices that unlock doors with a swipe of an NFC card or NFC-enabled mobile phone. Please refer to the Current and Future Access Modes section below for more information on current and future access methods.

UA-Card: A NFC card that is specific to your Access system and encrypted with a special algorithm that cannot be replicated, unlike other NFC cards. Your Access system will support any NFC card, so you can retain your current access cards.

It was the Dream Machine Pro I was thinking of. The reviews I've seen all say that if you have to buy a Dream Machine Pro just for the access control that you're better off going with the competition who's overall price will be lower.

That applies if you aren't planning on using the other stuff the Dream Machine is capable of. It's a single device that can manage all of your AP's, Security Cameras, Door Access and soon VoIP. Depending on the use I would think it would be worth it provided you are getting the functionality you want out of it.

That's sounding like a great product for the home, I'll have to keep my eye on them.

It's really not. Think of your home like a business. This is a product for a business that has confused itself with a home.

Sounds like it's not a product for business

It is not, probably not even a serious house product, just something that looks neat to play with (expensive toy.)

Yep - that's it exactly - it looks cool because it blends all those things together - but you have to ask yourself.. is that the way it should really be? for these particular services?
