    • UNMS vs Unifi for a deployment "today"

I realize the UNMS is the future. I am recommending Ubiquiti to a customer with 9 locations to upgrade as a part of our installation.

I havent used UNMS, just Unifi, and I am not sure if I can safely recommend they purchase ER-X units and install a UNMS server today, or if it still has quirks. In case of the latter I could just tell them to get the USG units and install a Unifi controller.

Just looking for some feedback as to what would best suit a production environment today. Particularly from @JaredBusch if he's around.

XFCE isn't bad, it just seems dated. Reminds me of the first time I used Linux in the early 2000's.

XFCE only seems that way by default. Look at Korora, they do an amazing job of polishing up XFCE. Feels super modern there.

But it IS dated, that's its charm. It is light and fast, nothing you don't need.

Yeah but can I watch YouTube and netflix through it???

Why wouldn't you be able to? HTML5 (which they both can use now) is implemented in the browser, nothing depends on anything else anymore. Besides, the GUI interface never made a difference with that anyway.

I've tried a few other things, would never be able to watch Youtube through Logmein, VNC, NoDesktop, very laggy compared to RDP 10...

@bigbear That's the only size I've ever seen on there. I think the $120 is before the promo pricing.

They had options up to almost $400 when it launched.

The $120 would make sense as the discounted price, as a 16GB virtual server isnt far behind that in price.

So I was about to do some tax planning on this. If BTC is still treated as property and capital gains tax applies, could BTC not be sold and then invested in actual property without paying taxes on gains?

Looks like only one kind is left, the 32gb. Is that $120 month already with the 60% off then?

    • RE: Responsive Firewall and external FreePBX users

@dashrender you could see opensips as a software version of this, but in high load scenarios or in transcoding the example @scottalanmiller gives about restricted instruction sets on the video chip is a great example.

If Asterisk was created after SIP standards were made it probably would have some type of domain filtering that would make the mobile issue a very easy fix.

That being said the responsive firewall was a huge leap forward, but i don’t see anything in their big requests that indicates they are going to go further. I’ve not tried to use the Sangoma SBC or to fix the issue since I’ve moved on. I’m guessing the domain for mobile access is very low amongst FreePBX users, or maybe it’s used on desktops inside a LAN that is not using the responsive firewall.

Think of an SBC as a voip firewall and/or voip router, depending on its configuration.

It's a proxy, not like a firewall or router. A bit different.

There are overlapping features and use cases, but they are not one and the same. An SBC can use provide a sip proxy for registration but it is not required.

The real point I guess is that FreePBX currently does not provide a "full compliment" solution for roaming users.

To that end, a SIP Proxy or an SBC that provides a mobile access solution can be used to register roaming devices and then those extensions are registered from the Proxy or SBC to FreePBX as a static IP address, eliminating the need to rely on responsive firewall.

Here is a guide to using Sangoma SBC with FreePBX

      https://wiki.freepbx.org/download/attachments/71828149/Sangoma-Software-SBC-for-Asterisk-PBX.pdf?version=1&modificationDate=1480001446000&api=v2

I use Opensips for signaling and permiter security with Freeswitch, even though freeswitch has domain filtering and sip profiles built in.

I also use Physical Genband and ACME packet SBC’s because they have physical CPU’s that can handle real time transcoding of tens of thousands of sessions concurrently, which a software solution can’t do. That is more typical for trunking but also necessary for things like Office 365 and Skye for Business calling integration.

So, how does a sbc solve that, wouldn't you want to have similar blocks happening on the sbc as you do on the FreePBX?

As I think a bit more, it likely won't, for the reason you mentioned. I'd probably run into the same problem.

You would not run into the same problem because an SBC doesn’t rely on the same mechanisms FreePBX uses for authentication and security. Not only will it solve the problem, using a border element for signaling and/media is the norm in voip.

Think of an SBC as a voip firewall and/or voip router, depending on its configuration. FreePBX does not make one, but Sangoma has for years.

    • RE: Phone System in Office 365

Updated Phone System In Office 365 Pricing shows that it still is $8 add-on for Microsoft Teams, plus the $12 add-on for domestic PSTN calling.

So it is $20/month/user for Phone System and PSTN calling to the US.

However, the $8 is lower than the previous $12/month/user for Cloud PBX. If you can use Hybrid mode to connect to your own SIP trunking its coming way down.

    • Phone System in Office 365

Cloud PBX is now being referred to as Phone System in. So "Phone System In Skype for Business" or "Phone System in Office 365". Now I see "Phone System in Microsoft Teams" which is where everything is heading. So catchy. That aside, I see roadmapped features like parking, external transfers and have worked around features like extensions with Powershell.

I have seen an uptick in interest on Microsoft Teams recently so I started another 0365 trial account.

I wanted to see if anyone out there is using Microsoft Teams as their phone system. Its been available for less than 30 days but it appears to be cheaper than the previous Cloud PBX + Skype For Business + PSTN calling cost. Apparently Skype for Business and Cloud PBX features are being rolled into Microsoft Teams for free?

Here is a screen shot of current features and the 2018 roadmap.

Anyone using Teams for Calling now?

    • RE: How to research SEO candidate

I have been researching and working on the same thing for a long time.

I know in the past there were a lot of ways to "game" your results, like link networks, but these are now penalized by Google.

If you think about it, Google wants every result to be relevant. So if your content, services and geography is relevant you will appear in the results. You used to have to "build" SEO, but those things seem to have very little impact on SEO anymore. Things you can not control (like people searching for something and picking a particular link) have more impact that back links and other SEO strategies. Page content means a lot more than metadata.

There are good plugins out there as mentioned above that are the best place to start, plus setting up a Google Business Page has a huge impact on returned results in your area.
