    • RE: Why Non-Uniform URE Distribution May Make Parity RAID Riskier Than Thought

Even without all of the "fancy maths", that just logically makes sense. "When we run tests on our study vehicle with 30,000 miles to see if an engine swap is feasible, we get high-success outcomes; therefore, we expect roughly the same results once the vehicle breaks down at 150,000 miles." The general entropy factor is not equal between the two scenarios, thus the results are skewed.

I don't care who said/wrote any bit of that article. I agree with 95% of it whole-heartedly. That is all. And, to be clear, I am speaking of the heart of what's said, not the silly details like the exact "$60,000" value, or the "car phone" remark. Those are only making a point, not the crux of the matter.

I very much dislike people that copy/paste crap on FB. Most of the time these people have no idea what they are even reposting. Seeing something blatantly wrong on ML is just insulting to the intelligent people that I thought were participating in this community.

The OP's posted information was two different things that were wrote by two different people and neither of the original authors were credited.

Who pissed in your Cheerios? If you don't like that the proper sources weren't credited, step up to the plate and give the proper credit. Either way, it doesn't change the wisdom the words express. That was my point. Maybe you disagree, which is perfectly fine.

@art_of_shred said in Would You Hire Someone in IT Who Does Not Have a Home Lab:

It's kinda simple. You're building a team. Do you pick people looking for a paycheck, or people with a passion about what you're doing? If you have the option, you're looking for passion... or you shouldn't be the one doing the hiring.

once again passion shouldn't be determined on if they do stuff outside of working hours. I work to get a paycheck yes, but I also show passion for my job while doing so.

Not good enough when there is a huge line of people behind you who show not only passion while at work, but also while at home. You're hamstringing yourself and saying it's not fair that they choose to be passionate always, and you only some of the time.

it's your choice - it's not a wrong choice, it's simply a choice.. and as such, your life will go different directions.

Bring this to Scott's constant talks about college. The person who goes into hotel staff our of HS, versus the one who goes to college. The non college guy will be light years ahead learning wise in the real world.

Sadly, so many uppers today will hold the non college people down because they (the uppers) think that college is some kind of right of passage - but that's becoming less and less the case these days.

So the people like me (that have hobbies in something other than what I do for a living) get screwed because they aren't willing to put time in after work to learn more things?

I have been successful in my life thus far, and not having a home lab hasn't held me back (that I am aware of). I learn what I need to for the job I am doing right now. If a new job requires me to learn new things, then I will. I am just not willing to sacrifice the few hours I have at home with my family to dedicate to a job. I already spend 50+ hours a week doing IT related things at work, the last thing I want to do is go home and do more of that. I guess I am just different and like my time outside of the IT world.

Amen. I can't believe this view is unacceptable to the NTG minions (not just the employees). Life is for living, and much of that (for me anyway) occurs NOT in front of a screen. I used to do the whole "eat, drink, live, breathe, shit IT stuff 24/7" thing when I was younger, but eventually doing IT for 40-60 hours a week becomes enough. I've never had a job where I didn't have the luxury of on the clock learning time (of which I have taken great advantage), so maybe my view is fuct, but at 42, I have other (better) shit to do after I clock out.

So, back in your ambitious youth, did that serve you well? Now that you've put in the extra time to get real experience in a broader form, do you not enjoy the benefits of having gained that experience? And once again, the opponents seem to be missing the point; it's not that we would never hire someone without a home lab. It's that we're looking for avid learners. With the number of options we have to sift through, we're going to go for the ones who possess the traits we feel are beneficial. Why is that so seemingly difficult to grasp? I'm certainly NOT saying that it is an official prerequisite for employment, which I think has been demonstrated numerous times. But, given the choice, that's where we are going to lean.

So, where are the nay-sayers? This is a discussion forum, so where is the discussion? I am going to agree with Scott on this subject, but I don't maintain that I am absolutely right. What do other members think about this?

I'm curious; why does it matter who said something? What bearing does that have on the truth of what was said?

Depends. For most people, IMHO, the source is the only thing that lends credence to the statement. If homeless people tell you that hard work gets you nowhere it means one thing. If Bill Gates says it, it means another. And if you don't care who said something because you are basing your agreement on whether you agree or not then knowing who said it at all is pointless.

So I say, it's fine to skip saying who said something because you are just repeating something that yu agree with. But stating who said something and having it not be correct matters because a lot of people only take advice based on the fame or stature of who said it.

I guess that's really the point. I weigh what I hear against my own values/judgment/opinions and then assign value to what I have heard, rather than just trusting things I hear from people who I have deemed worthy of influencing my values/judgment/opinions. It's the incoming information that's on trial, not me.

Of course, there is always a difference between the same sentence coming from Mother Teresa and Adolph Hitler, but that's not really what I am talking about. Even then, I care more about what's said than who said it. After all, Hitler wasn't an idiot and Teresa wasn't a genius.

You don't respawn where you die. You spawn at your spawn point. If she fell into the void in creative mode, just quit the game and fire it back up.

Do we have rules specific to the job posting section? If not, we probably should. Maybe any and all discussion should be limited to simply yes/no questions about the specific job in question.

No, that's really why I was asking. It's always just been another part of the discussion forum. That some people felt that it should be treated with kit gloves rather than open to normal discussion was surprising, to me.

I can understand why it might be best left to just the posting and detail-oriented questions. When everyone starts knocking the posting, it loses credibility in general, as I think @IRJ was saying. I agree with you that the discussion was warranted, but maybe it should have been linked to an actual discussion topic elsewhere and not cluttering up a specific job posting. Really, I am agreeing with just about everyone's points. Nothing wrong with discussing, but do it in the right place. If you disrespect my wife, we should take it outside, and not trash the restaurant.

We have a customer with 2 WAN connections (Verizon is the main and a local ISP is the failover) set up on an EdgeMax router. We've tested the failover, and it appears to function flawlessly. There's some configuration required to do it, but it's pretty simple.

The way I see it, the 2 hottest activity spots in any post/thread are the OP (sidebar ad is there) and the latest comments (bottom ad is there). Only in the case of a new topic with no posts on it do you have both ads visible on the same screen. Unless it displays differently for mobile. If so, get a computer and voila: problem solved!
