@coliver Beware the accuracy of what they list on their site. Try it, but you may end up needing to open a support ticket to get the most current settings. I've encountered that before, more than once.

And there is little to no chance that I'm not related to the Miller for which your county seat is named, there 😉

I always joke that I can't marry someone from the area because we were guaranteed to be related 😛

My family is famously the most inbred in America. There is even a hospital in Bucks County dedicated to researching the DNA damage from it. It's very sad.

There are just so many things I could input here. I will do my best to resist. But I make no promises...

    • RE: Apple is fighting the FBI

Between precedent and law of unintended consequences, I don't see how any thinking person could buy that it would be used strictly as stated and never be leaked/hacked, and never used by government agencies in whatever way they internally justify as acceptable. This is the typical model for the erosion of freedoms in the good ol' USA. Create something that should never be and that no one wants, because there is an extreme case that is so important that the public decides it would be ok, but only in this case. Then, it becomes institutionalized, and it's on the books. Once a mechanism is institutionalized, the only limitation is in the definition of the terms surrounding utilization. Definitions are changed over time, and the powerful "tool" becomes another weapon to be used against whoever we want to call an offender, as defined by whoever wields the power to define the terms. Freedom sacrificed in the name of security yields tyranny. It's not a new idea.

The truth is that Ozzy should just stop. But, that doesn't take away what he has done. He is not famous because of "The Osbournes" or "The Kardashians". Those came much later... well into the time when he should have just stopped already.

Problem is, to the current generation, that's all that he is. It has completely overshadowed his musical history because the gap between them was so big. They probably would have commonly known him for his music had he actually just retired. But since he become so well known as the second tier reality television star, it's hard to think of him as anything else today. I think in ten years he's going to regret that decision - unless he was all out of money and was just desperate. He traded in his legacy for that money.

      Problems:

      1. He will surely be dead in 10 years, so I don't see that as a big worry to him.
      2. I don't consider 15 year old girls' perceptions into my calculations of what is or isn't a big deal.
      3. Reality TV is about the most worthless thing ever conceived. I am perfectly happy to dismiss that it even exists, and I am sure my life is much better off as a result.

So she says, but she isn't in bed. She's making cinnamon rolls for tomorrow morning... and getting flour all over her nice clothes, and everything else in the vicinity.

    • Tracking the origination of a shadow copy

I have a client who is trying to pin the creation of a shadow copy on a particular bit of software that we're using, that I am quite sure is not the culprit. Using the "vssadmin list shadows" command, I can see the shadow copy, but I can't discern if any of the resulting information is telling me what requested said shadow copy. Can anyone offer advice as to what I am not doing that I should be, or if something like the "originating machine" is the originator of the request? Thanks!

I completely agree - a total Popcorn movie - but really - turn my brain off and just have fun.

      Spoilers
I had more issue with Will Smith stealing a choper in the last movie to find his girlfriend than I did with the kids sudden appearance picking up Papa Levinson.

Yeah that death scene was definitely super cheese! I agree with your assessment complete and was left confused.

Also, what about the fact that the spheriod dude has all this advanced technology, but doesn't have shields? Really? Come on! Oh OH oh I know.. the sensors on the ship knew they weren't the bad aliens (we still don't have a name for them) so they didn't raise - oh never mind - it's just a movie 😛

Not to mention that they have this knowledge-transfer session with the alien orb, who knows all about how to defeat the Harvesters, and they use none of the new information to defeat them. Instead it's a "let's try to beat it at it's own game" plan, with no guarantee of success. Oh, and why not just drill into Saturn (they passed right by) to get energy from a planet's core? It's big, and it's uninhabited. No fight.

Remember, "wants to" is different than "is willing to". Sometimes it can even be unintentional and not malicious in any way. The end result is that opting for cheap every time is not in any company's best interest, but your tone implies that it is always malicious and intentional.

This was prevalent for a number of years at my job... As I was leaving, it did not seem to be quite as large of a problem.

Why is it a problem at all? As long as everyone knows who is the IT decision maker, that's all that matters. That's the person you (I dislike saying this) blame when things don't work because of some decision that was made.

I agree, I see no problem at all. Not even sure what the perceived one is. Maybe that the IT Managers were not admitting that htey were?

LOL - exactly - that is the real problem. For example, my boss (or the board) are the ones that make the decision, not me. Therefore the fault is really there's. But they don't see it that way, which of course is crazy... instead they say - hey Dash, that solution that I picked from the ones you provided was shit, this is your fault.

I would argue that you shouldn't ever propose a solution that could turn into shit.

Only provide options that will work, and then the business can't make the "wrong choice" and have wasted money.

What?!? You must be new at this. Management will seldom let you get away with only providing good options, especially when they dictate your parameters with inane boundaries.

@Minion-Queen said in Joining/Binding Macs to AD Domain - Should I Bother?:

Binding them is easier now that it used to be, but if your current system is working... why fix what's not broke?

That is generally my line of thought. However, I was wondering if it is a best practice thing and if there was something I hadn't considered as a benefit.

In a sense, I think joining to a domain becomes a necessary evil. There are obvious access and control benefits, but at the cost of added complexity and security risk. If the Macs are set up in such a way as to be happy where they are, why introduce the security risk? Is there any real gain from being on AD that you are feeling pain from not currently having?

I was not aware of a security risk by joining them to the domain. How does it increase risk?

It doesn't. If someone hacks your network, I doubt they would try to login to Macs through Active Directory. The paydirt is on servers and network storage anyway. Hackers aren't going to go after your marketing team's Macs.

Because they are Macs and not real business computers, I yield to your point.
