    • Scoop- Chocolatey alternative

Just formatted my wok laptop and was installing basic softwares. Forgot the name Chocolatey and was looking for homebrew alternative and found "Scoop"

Scoop command-line installer for Windows, and scoop installs programs to your home directory by default. So you don’t need admin permissions to install programs, and you won’t see UAC popups every time you need to add or remove a program.

    • RE: Scoop- Chocolatey alternative

How is Scoop different to Chocolatey?

      • Installs to ~/scoop/ by default You can set up your own programs and not worry that they'll interfere with other users' programs (or theirs with yours, perhaps more importantly). You can optionally choose to install programs system-wide if you have admin rights.

      • No UAC popups, doesn't require admin rights. Since programs are installed just for your user account, you won't be interrupted by UAC popups.

      • Doesn't pollute your path. Where possible, Scoop puts your program shims in a single directory and just adds that to your path

      • Doesn't use NuGet. NuGet is a great solution to the problem of managing software library dependencies. Scoop avoids this problem altogether: each program you install is isolated and independent.

      • Simpler than packaging Scoop isn't a package manager, rather it reads plain JSON manifests that describe how to install a program and its dependencies.

      • Simpler app repo. Scoop just uses git for its app repo. You can create your own repo, or even just a single file that describes an app to install.

      • Can't install a specific version of a program. Scoop doesn't allow installing every version release of a program, just the latest stable version. There are some exceptions, e.g. Python 2.7 and Ruby 1.9 which are commonly required—these can be installed from python27 and ruby19.

      • Focuses on developer tools. While it would be easy to install Skype with Scoop, this will probably never be in Scoop's main bucket (app repository). Scoop focuses on open-source, command-line developer tools.

    • Backup Restore Tests

How often do you test your backups and do you follow any check lists for that? I want to start a scheduled task list for such. Currently this is done without a set schedule and i want to involve my team members to follow a set schedule and update the results somewhere. What do you guys use? An excel sheet?

    • RE: Reverse Engineer Apache Jackrabbit Setup

I am not sure if this is helpful, but a search got me this http://blog.mooregreatsoftware.com/

      Part of that blog:
Sadly, the metadata files for AEM Package Manager are very, very poorly documented. To make matters worse, there is a lot of duplication and inconsistencies between them. There is a little bit of information at the Apache Jackrabbit FileVault Documentation site, but it is focussed at the Vault filesystem and the like, not specifically how to use packages. The Adobe 6.1 Package Manager documentation discusses creating a package through the UI, but doesn’t discuss any of the mechanics. The Maven VLT plugin talks a little about how to set up Maven, but has huge holes in what is actually done and what the values really mean.

In an effort to get some better understanding, I’ve done a lot of reading, testing, and reverse engineering to come up with the following information. If anyone knows where I can learn more, I’d love to know and pass that along!

Not sure if it completely talks about Apache Jackrabbit, but thought this might help.

And another one; talks about exporting data as XML

    • RE: Photo storage -Flickr vs Google photos vs ?

I use Dropbox as my primary photo storage from all my connected devices (camera upload), this takes care of full resolution images storage. Along with that i have google photos as well, photo upload automatically from my mobile devices (unlimited storage, not full resolution, but thats ok as i have the originals in Dropbox). Plus all my computers have google photos app installed which takes the photos from my dropbox camera uploads.

      Benefits?

      • Original photos on Dropbox

      • Awesome filtering option using google photos (surprised to see acurate results for even facial reaction like smile, cry, kids etc). No more manual tagging or renaming files/folders.

      • Created another google account for wife, and just create shared albums from my google photos with wife where even she can add photos to library without spending a dime for her account!

      • Bonus: Using Google Photoscan to scan all our physical old photos to the library as well!

Total amount spent: $99 /year for 1TB (Also includes other files that i save)

This is for one of our close contact with the company who asked us to help them, option for a rebuild was suggested but looks like they dont have a healthy backup to start with. So i have to clean this up, get the iis site back up and running and then see what we could do to make it better and avoid issues

    • Træfɪk, a modern reverse proxy

I am currently working on a complete application lifecycle for us which includes Docker, Vagrant, git, continuous integration, continuous deployment etc. Part of making few standard docker images for our developers for solutions like Drupal, Wordpress etc, found this amazing reverse proxy called traefik.

      https://traefik.io/

Træfɪk is a modern HTTP reverse proxy and load balancer made to deploy microservices with ease. It supports several backends (Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, Marathon, Mesos, Consul, Etcd, Zookeeper, BoltDB, Rest API, file…) to manage its configuration automatically and dynamically.

    • File server/Document management system

I am currently checking for a file server/document management system solution for a friend of mine. His company needs a solution, currently looking at SharePoint online (Migration will be from local file server). What they are more interested is to have compliance, security, DLP etc. Box is another option, but I don't really like the waterfall permission rights that's been used on box.

I am checking if NextCloud enterprise has some features that matches box for example https://www.box.com/security/governance-and-compliance

What would be the solutions if the requirement is more on the above-mentioned features?

    • Decision on Remote Support Tool- ScreenConnect

      Hi all

      Joined a new company 🙂

Part of my role is to optimize and do continuous improvements to the IT Infrastructure, and I would like to implement a good remote support tool for end user support (around 250 users as of now). I am thinking about getting the on premise version of screen connect as I've personally used this before and know that a lot of you here use that as well.

Just wanted to check with the community before i make the decision on this. Are there anything that could be a blocker on going forward with this? The pricing page says its $2,195 but not sure if this is one-time fee or a yearly renewal cost.

I am thinking about setting this up on a CentOS 7 server, but a rough search gave me some topics here about some issues for screenconnect with centos7. Not sure if there is a windows based setup available. And planning to have this as an on-demand support tool rather than installing it as an agent on all machines; may be i might decide installing it on all users except the senior management. (For them it would be on demand to make sure that no one gets into their machine without a ticket) I am currently working on few other high priority projects that i do not have much time to check this in details, so asking your help! 🙂
