my dad is like that where he cannot disconnect for any length of time. When he goes on "vacation" to aruba he connects home via vpn and works 4-5hrs per day. I try to cut him off but he just can't let things go. Granted he was a small business owner at the time, now he works for a different company so we will see this year what he does.

It's completely different when you OWN the company or are some very high position in the company versus being the IT guy. In my case we have a consulting company on standby for when I'm unavailable or need help.

Yes. At VP or higher, the company pretty much owns you.

He does have backup minions. And would not have to do anything when he was on vacation however the worrying about the possibility is the issue. Not the actually having to do anything. But my whole team is like that. I have a minion or 2 who don't take vacation time as ordered 😛

Well I can imagine that it's a hard thing to do especially if you are involved pretty deeply in projects and other happenings. I got that way when I was working at MDC and Goodwill. It started effecting my personal life, mainly with my wife and I and family.

Understandable. It cost me relationships, friends, health, etc.

Most of your team, perhaps? When I'm on vacation, I'm unplugged. Not doing so burned me out a few years ago, and I'm still losing the weight i gained from it.

If you can't break away from work completely for a week, it's a sign of one or more things:

      1. You have a problem such as addiction to work
      2. Your company doesn't have proper controls in place to mitigate the impact the loss of an employee
      3. You haven't properly cross-trained your backup person.

The same thing applies to vacations as getting hit by a bus. What happens if you get hit by a bus? Will the company go under? If so, fix it. If not, enjoy vacation.

I've added a second monitor to a Touchsmart 9100. It had a DVI out.

    • RE: Held Hostage by a Cloud Service Provider?

The example you give isn't all that different from having lots of data in a system made by a company that went bankrupt. When considering any solution (hosted or otherwise), an exit strategy should be a consideration.

I'm not sure how many computers you have out there, but have you considered SCCM? It'll deploy your base image and do all the rest for you. You can go from bare metal to ready-to roll in a couple of clicks.

Why did that just make me think of The Shining?

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy."

Play's for after work. Outside of emergencies, I don't bring work into play and vice versa.

Open plans suck, especially for introverts. I couldn't stand it so I had them make me a real cube.

That's one of the reasons I left my last job. I'd be trying to bang out some detailed project work and have Nerf darts whizzing by. Cubes are better, but I prefer an office. Some of my best work happens when I'm in an office with low background noise and no windows.

Now, there's nothing wrong with Nerf wars, when appropriate though.

      That depends on your personality.

Did no one give you a Nerf gun, sending you into a deep depression and anger ?? 😉

Interesting. I wonder if that's using just the device passcode, or if it's also being backed with an ActiveSync policy that requires encryption?

OK I have to ask.. what's the WHY problem?

I'm a bit curious on that as well. It's just a matter of not having 2 machines with the same SID in a single AD environment.
