@Ambarishrh That looks cool. The ability to have offline maps is key when traveling in foreign countries where paying for cellular data is just so expensive. A couple years back, I traveled to Germany a lot, and I used "Here" maps (Windows/Nokia phone app) that allowed for offline map downloads. It saved me a lot of money on data. Awesome stuff, glad to see Google is now doing it.

I've used DynDNS which is also supported with Ubiquiti EdgeMax stuff.

I thought that they were no longer free?

They aren't. I didn't realize he was looking for a free one.

He did not specify free. But for a home network, I was assuming.

Correct, free is what I was looking for.

Well that was easy. For others looking to setup the EdgeMax line of routers with afraid.org (Assumes eth0 is your WAN port)

      configure
set service dns dynamic interface eth0 service afraid host-name <host>
set service dns dynamic interface eth0 service afraid server freedns.afraid.org
set service dns dynamic interface eth0 service afraid login <username>
set service dns dynamic interface eth0 service afraid password <password>
      commit
      save
      exit

      Check for status:

      show dns dynamic status

      Force update:

      update dns dynamic interface eth0

Well then I think I'll try out afraid.org, since I have an ERX at home. Thanks for the feedback!

    • Best Dynamic DNS service for home

I've had the same IP at home for the past like 8 months, and have whitelisted that IP on many client firewalls. Of course, I upgrade my router to a new firmware, reboot, and get a new IP. Shame on me for not using a DDNS service sooner.

What does everyone use for Dynamic DNS for their homes networks?

      1. Built a firewood rack.

      2. Poured a drink.

      3. Emptied glass.

      4. Spun up Ubuntu server on Xen

      5. Installed Plex on above server

      6. Migrating media library to Plex. - Plex is pretty freggin awesome.

      7. Now debating whether or not I want to blow away my Xen install and start over on just one array. Currently Xen is on one RAID10 array, and the SR is on another bigger RAID10 array.

      8. Pouring another drink.

@jt1001001 Thanks, I'll check those guys out. And I like the idea of having a separate WLAN for the kiddos.

@Dominica Good to know. He has a kindle as well, but mostly uses it for watching movies. It's older and is showing it's age in performance.

@garak0410 I haven't looked into it much yet, but tried the family thing last night. My first order of business though will be to filter internet at my house so he doesn't accidentally stumble upon something on the internet. Was thinking OpenDNS or some other free DNS filter.

@prcssupport I found that some of his school apps are also available as Chrome apps, so that really opens up the possibilities to almost anything.

    • Tablet or small laptop for 1st grader

So my oldest son is in first grade. He uses iPads at school for some apps that the school has. They also seem to work on android devices as well. I have a windows tablet that I was going to let him use, but the apps just aren't there for the windows OS. So, the question is:

What is a good option for him where I can have parental controls, etc for a decent price. I don't care about the OS. ( he already is on Linux Mint on an old PC I gave him) 🙂 Would an iPad be ok, or maybe a chrome book? Something else?
