RE: Unifi cloud controller going the way of home office?
I was looking at the Omada line recently too. I still have not found a direct replacement for the EdgeRouter lineup. Which is a real shame, because they are such great devices. Then I found Omada on a blog somewhere but haven't pulled the trigger on getting a unit to try. I might have to though, as I have been waiting for an EdgeRouter 4 for over a year or more.

Nexcloud Photos 2.0 (https://nextcloud.com/athome/) seems like it got better. But who knows.
Then there is this: https://www.photosync-app.com/home.html But that is just a sync tool.
So I have to say.... So far, I am pleasantly surprised and impressed with this. Photos 2.0 definitely takes some tweaking and customizing via add on preview generators, etc. But so far, I am liking what I am seeing. I might do a write up on my findings/experience so everything it documented for me as well as others.

Does anyone install Nextcloud (On Ubuntu latest version) using snap?
I did, and everything was going fine. But then I wanted to change the default storage location for all of the media to a directory "/data" I cannot for the life of me figure out what config/permissions are incorrect. But taking a step back, is installing via Snap recommended (for home use)
Disregard. I went with a manual install and was able to change the path quite easily. Downloading/syncing all my stuff from Backblaze B2 now!

Backed up my home lab to Backblaze B2. Now I'm going to destroy my esxi server (spun up for testing) and move to Proxmox.
That's a huge leap, the worst to the best, IMHO. Now that Hyper-V is gone, VMware stands out even more for how weak and problematic it is.
We've started moving the fleet to ProxMox and do about one migration per seek (moving something like 200 servers.) Every update is just fantastic. Makes everything so much easier and more reliable.
I was bummed out about the Hyper-V announcement. But from what everyone on here is reporting, it sounds like Proxmox has improved significantly since the last time I evaluated it. (2, probably almost 3 years ago)

If Frontier fiber proves to be stable, I'll ditch the old ISP.
I had Frontier in Dallas and they were fantastic. Second best ISP that I ever dealt with, the best being Optimum Cable in NYC.
However, Frontier is the little ISP from my home town of Rochester and they are a pariah there. They are well known locally for being unethical and dishonest.
So I have heard nothing but nightmare stories about Frontier, but those stories were all about DSL. I heard that Frontier Fiber is a completely different animal. Customer service (actually getting ahold of someone has been less than ideal, but I do eventually get through to them on the phone. To be fair though, I have just had to contact them regarding questions about my installation.

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
@dafyre So my main ISP (a local provider who has historically been fantastic) is just cable. They are rolling out fiber "soon" but cant give me a date. So, against my gut feeling, I decided to give Frontier fiber a try. They just rolled it out in our neighborhood. $40 for 500/500 with no contract. I figured I'll give it a try and see what happens. I kept my old ISP for now and just lowered my speed I am now paying the same monthly cost as I was before for 2 ISPs, doing failover on my edge router. If Frontier fiber proves to be stable, I'll ditch the old ISP.

Plus I just got fiber to my house, so I can download all my stuff from Amazon pretty quick. </BragsAboutFiberToEveryoneHeKnowsEvenPeopleWhoDontCare> (Wife rolls eyes)

After I build out my new proxmox box, this will be the first thing I spin up. If I like the app to do basic viewing, organizing, etc, AND it syncs properly, I would call that a win. We will see!

RE: Miscellaneous Tech News
This might just spark my interest to give Nextcloud a try again. Years ago, I gave up on self hosting my photos because it just wasn't "wife approved" enough for me. It was clunky and didn't "just work". So I chose to just go with auto backup with Amazon Prime Photos. That has been OK, but I do have to pay for it. My new idea to prove out is:
Have an app on iOS that automatically syncs all of our photos to a local server in my house. (I don't care what that is....nextcloud, something else that's better, whatever) Then nightly, sync that with Backblaze B2.
This seems like a simple concept, but years ago, it just wasn't user (wife) friendly. Maybe with the new release of nextcloud, this will be better?

@JaredBusch I hope they catch back up. I see they now have the ER-x in stock that hasn't been around for a while. Hoping they get the rest of their supply chain worked out. I did buy a dozen just in case though.
I need an ER-4 and an EdgeSwitc 24 POE 250
cannot find anywhereyeah, they basically don't exist
@scottalanmiller Any recommendations for your new "go to" product(s) for this? MicroTik? Pfsense/Netgate? Something else?

@JaredBusch said in Alternative to never in stock Ubiquiti EdgeMax line:
So 2022 is almost done and Ubiquiti never has stock of EdgeMax gear.
I need to move on.
What do you all recommend today?
If I need a NGFW because “compliance” I go with Watchguard.
But for everything I have used EdgeMax for so long, I don’t have a solid grasp on options.
A manufacturer that make switches and a basic router is probably the best choice, but I am not tied to anything at this point.
I am also in the same boat. I really like Ubiquiti EdgeMax line, but the stock levels equaling near zero this year is just terrible. I need another "go to" simple device like the EdgeMax line that I can use/recommend.

RE: Mesh Central
@syko24 I didn't have a closing } in one of my sections so it was ignoring some of the config. Fixed.
Thanks!

@AdamF Just looking at the syntax, have you tried using 1 and 0 instead of true / false?
Good idea, but this is the direct from the manual. So I would assume that "true" is the correct value.
@Ylian posted a response to a similar issue on Reddit. Make sure the passwordrequirements section is inside the default domain section.
Hmm. It is inside the domain section, and the whole config file is valid JSON. At least it is valid JSON as far as an online validator is concerned. It's either still something wrong with my config, or is there another option that I am missing to enable this?

RE: Mesh Central
This tool set is amazing. The branding and customization options are really nice. I want to setup 2fa for ALL users of the system. I want to force the users to enable 2fa. I put this in the config.json file, but it is still not prompting/forcing users to setup 2fa. Is anyone else using this?
