Anyone using more than 2 monitors
-
At my old job before I left I had dual monitors.
Two 22" wide screens. I didn't like it very much compared to two 4:3's ideally 1600x1200 resolution but can't really get them anymore or they cost a fortune.
At home I had/have 1 x 30" Apple Cinema Display (linked to my Macbook pro, but do not like having two different size monitors, so keep the lid closed) and I do not like it. It is too big, I find my eyes moving too much if that makes sense, even though I am quite far apart from the monitor. Managing various windows seems easier on dual screens for me.
I am currently looking to change this setup to dual screens, seen that dell have the new slim bezel, still widescreen which I do not like, but might consider that.
Another change I will be doing is moving from OSX at home to Microsoft. I prefer the management of windows and dual screens on Microsoft.
Do you prefer 16:9/16:10 or do you prefer 4:3 for IT work (not movies)
Thanks,
G.
(I've used the word "Windows" when I am talking about the different elements such as finder/browsers and so on. I've Used Microsoft when I actually mean the "Windows" OS, but I didn't want to confuse the terminology and keep it consistent.)

Gabi definitely has a point about using dual 4:3 screens versus wide or ultra wide screen monitors. Like her I dislike the fact that without spending a fortune I can't get more than 1080 lines of resolution on a desktop.
I currently run a pair of 22" monitors in HD res. I'd love to have a pair of 27's, but only if they had a higher res than HD.

Yeah, @Dominica uses 1080p monitors but I use 1200p monitors. It makes a difference. For work, the vertical resolution seems to make more of a difference.
-
Gabi, sorry about that.. I was thinking American names... shame on me since I have a Spanish friend who's name is Gabi also.

It makes the most sense for more vertical resolution for things like spreadsheets or page layouts. They were doing great.. the manufacturers where increasing it well.. then they reached 1080p... and just stopped.

HP and Samsung that we use go to 1200p in many models. I love 1200, it's really slick. You notice the extra resolution.

What models are you using?

For work purposes and the maximizing of realestate, have you guys seen the new 21:9 resolution monitors?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005396
This one specifically is a 2560 x 1080, but they also make 4096 x 1080 models.

Anyone considered becoming old-skool cool and reverting back to a single 15" CRT monitor.
"You can't beat CRT, man. This new stuff just doesn't look right......"

Interesting but the opposite of what we want (except for gaming) because the biggest issue is the lack of vertical resolution, horizontal we have in abundance.

What kind of notification are you looking for?

@Mike-Ralston Love the size. I had the grid for a 19" screen 3 years ago, I couldn't wait to use it and now I am wondering why I stopped using it.
-
I am jealous i only have one monitor.
-
at work i have three monitors at home i went from 1-2 -3-6-9-3-2-1-4-1 and im planning on a three setup again.
i go though phases. -
@don91 Was the 6 two rows of three stacked and the 9 three rows of three stacked?
-
When I worked in the Wall St trading floors the 3x3 setup was common.

@scottalanmiller As of yet, these panels are only in 1080 height format, but Sony and Samsung are already working on 4096 x 1600 ones. Should give you plenty of extra vertical space, and if we see curved panels come to this area, you could effectively replace a 5 monitor setup with a single monitor. Of course, you would need a beastly GPU to even view text files at 60Hz and a DisplayPort 1.2 connection, but the technology does exist.
-
That would be awesome, especially if it is touch screen. I imagine something out of Minority report in the near near future. I had hoped W8 would have brought touchscreen monitors prices down and that there would be more choices.

One of the things that I like about multiple monitors is that I have discrete workspaces. One large monitor would be great for gaming but I'm not sure that I would prefer it for work.
