ownCloud, Inc. today announced the formation of the ownCloud Foundation, a not-for-profit entity with the charter of stewarding the ownCloud ecosystem, and guaranteeing the viability and availability of free ownCloud now and in the future.

The ownCloud Foundation governs and drives the vision, direction and development of the ownCloud ecosystem as a fully open source, community-based project. The Foundation is intended to increase global participation in the development and adoption of ownCloud for all users – from individuals to small and medium businesses and large enterprises. It also ensures the continuity of the ownCloud project, irrespective of any commercial entities.

Huh - seems like odd news considering some of the rumors we've heard recently.

and I agree with Scott, it's awesome news.

That is why they are called rumors.

But read that last bit again.

In my mind, this still hints at a conflict between owncloud.org and owncloud.com

What is the conflict? That the commercial version is doing very well or very poorly?

The developers have never participated with the community. Their own forums is a waste of space. You would think that it would be a place to go to interact, but it is not. If you expect anything there, you will be told to go post it on github. It is strictly community only.

The founder recently left over differences with the company.

The public perception is (was?) that the community edition was severely looked down on by the developers.
