I have a DL380 that I'll be retiring soon. I'd love to use it as the basis for my AppAssure backup server.
This server is setup with eight 2.5" drive bays.

I've looked at purchasing eight 1 TB drives, they will run approximately $2K.

Considering all of the other options out there, this seems very high for what would end up being a RAID 6 6 TB array.

I need the processing power to run the AppAssure software, so any solution has to either be an upgrade to this box, or added storage to this box, or a completely new box with processing power for AppAssure.

Today I'm using an EXSi VM to host AppAssure, connecting to a Drobo Pro (8 bay) via iSCSI in single disk recovery (probably a mistake). It's low as molasses.

Spend the extra $1199.92 and get 2TB drives for it. http://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9b-22-178-657

And put the whole thing into OBR10, you'd have 8TB to play with.

Yes its a good chunk of money. but I don't see anyone else posting 😛

LOL, not to mention I'd have to find drive sleds somewhere.

are you sure it's a sled and not just a plastic snap in like the IBM servers come with?

There is no official third party sleds for HP servers. HP internally does not even have a part number. So you take a lot of risk doing that. It can be done on older servers, but it is risky.

So you were thinking of running AppAssue right on the DL380? Could you still use the DL380 for but without buying any additional drives? Then only buy the storage separately?

                        Yes I can do that.

And when you say run AppAssure right on the DL380, I will virtualize it. Hyper-V most likely.

Okay, that makes things a lot more flexible.

                            Cool. Sounds like a plan.

Yep - the issue about leaving the chassis is IOPs and possibly through put.

Couldn't these be from a system someone recycled and the recycler is simply attempting to piece out the parts?

Yeah I was thinking the same. Buy old tiny drives off Ebay... replace the drive.

But then again, going that route and using internal disk is probably not the way to go.. external disk is probably better.

The smallest, cheapest option would be a Synology DS214 two bay, RAID 1 NAS unit. It will do GigE NFS or iSCSI or SMB, and you can put 7200 RPM or even 10K drives in it. $299 for the NAS, then whatever for two drives.
