How is this still even being debated? Good article.

Because of the stupidest statement around "if you haven't done anything wrong, then you have nothing to hide"

This clear failing of understanding the principal of privacy is where our citizenry just give away their rights in some unrealistic hope for security.

If you think we did nothing wrong, you have no reason to look!

That's just it, they are claiming they are only looking at those they think did wrong. But that belief should always have to go through a court.

Even if you think i did do something wrong -- where's the warrant? You don't have one? Oh, too bad. Even if they did have one, and I am stupid enough to have my device with the incriminating evidence with me... I don't have to incriminate myself by decrypting my device.

I think a lot of times, especially now-days, encryiption is necessary to protect ourselves from all kinds of prying eyes -- including hackers and three-letter agencies.

We can only claim, from a court perspective, to be protecting ourselves from the unsavory. Sadly the courts will probably more often than not side with law enforcement if not for the fact that these protections (think encryption) are needed to protect ourselves from non law unsavory types.

The good thing is there are enough of those to keep us going indefinitely.
