"While you are here, do you know about Jesus?"

And watch how many people dive back into the flood waters to take their chances with the snakes and gators?

Thats their choice, but at least the church would be doing what it was originally meant to do.

Exactly. Couldn't agree more with all of your points.

I thought the original goal of the church was as a money grab to help people as they traveled. With the expectation of leaving something of value to the church as a form of gratitude. . . .

As everyone is imperfect, this applies to everyone. Pastors included.

edit: also to help support each other through personal struggles and to help with each other's relationship with God.

The purpose of the church was there to act as a hostels as people would pass through. They would speak about religion and expect items in return. Ie to Make money.

Churches and religion are built around earning money for the Church.

Hey no one said Joel Osteen is an evil cult leader, he just happens to be stupidly rich for being a cult leader. . .

Most rich people don't just give away their fortune (there are some for sure)

I am sorry you feel this way. How do I explain this? The church in this world is just a congregation made up of imperfect people, doing what they can to help each other and the community around them. Are there hypocrites in the church? All of the time.

The real church is the bride of Christ. They/We're made up across the denominations and holds the true spirit. It is really difficult to explain online.

Most cult following is difficult to explain, period.

I'm explaining history, and it's historically accurate that churches (of all kinds) acted as hostels, and held religious ceremony (Sunday Mass) and expected payment(tokens of gratitude) for it.

Payment or tokens of gratitude for shelter and food, which often (for the time) was way more money then shelter and food during travels was worth at any other hostel.

All because for the benefits of being better than ones self by needing church to know not to steal from thy neighbor, or to not covet they neighbors wife, to not murder.

I get it some things needed to be taught, but don't put your blinders on in today's life and expect others to see the church as anything other than a business, built on religion.

If that is the way that you see it, then that is how you see it. You've made your decision and I have made mine. If you want to cast judgement on today's church because of the past church, then I think you are making an unjust assumption.

Do they ask for tithe? Yes. It costs money to keep the building open, keep the lights on, and pay the ministers their salaries. Like Jeremy said earlier, most pastors are not rich. Even those in small churches works a job outside of the church to pay their personal bills while still volunteer ministering at their church.

If you think I have blinders on, then you are sorely mistaken. I see what is going on in our country and I don't like one bit of it. People are at each others throats over everything. Is there any thing that I can do about that? No, except for Pray for them. That is all that I can do.

I am not examining history. I'm looking at the church now. Again, are we perfect? Not by a long shot. Are there hypocrites in the church? Absolutely, everywhere. But, I'd rather go to church with a hypocrite than to hell with one.

I'm not here to argue that church is a bad thing, church as a whole adds some value, where I don't see it personally. I do for myself, address the issues in my life as they come up.

I help people without the expectation of payment when they need help.

If a church expects or request payment for things that others offer for free, where is the value in church?

Look, back in the long, long ago, the greedy rich folks (the only ones who could read and write) wrote down the "word of god" and handed it down to the ignorant masses to be obeyed verbatim. Obviously, they included many passages that benefited them personally, because why not? If you can write the word of god, why not get paid?

"God said give us 10% off the top..."

Done. It is now and has always been expected of every church goer to chip in 10% of their gross income... because the church figured out long ago how to not ever pay taxes (which continues to this day). And I'll just bring up the systemic, church endorsed "altar boy" program.... The "church" has been a bastion of evil, regression, corruption, and greed since the beginning, and that has not changed one bit. They may not burn people alive to test their faith anymore, but the "church" has done far more evil than good. I hope they get the same harsh judgment they threaten the non-believers with.

You mean the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible, the one that was chained to every pulpit across Europe? Yeah, we don't use that. Our Bibles are translated from the Hebrew and Greek writings. There is a little bit lost in translation, but we try to get either the simplest of understandings or the truest of meanings, or some where in the middle.

                                      Try Malachi 3:10

"10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be [a]food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until [b]it overflows."

Look, back in the long, long ago, the greedy rich folks (the only ones who could read and write) wrote down the "word of god" and handed it down to the ignorant masses to be obeyed verbatim.

"God said give us 10% off the top..."

                                        Try Malachi 3:10

"10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be [a]food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until [b]it overflows."

Pay my servants now, and when you're dead and don't need money will riches flow for you...

                                        Sounds a lot like a scam to me. . . .

@nerdydad 1. Translations that span thousands of years are not reliable. When a tiny percent of the population is literate, they are dependent on the honesty of the translators. Since those translators are human, all their work is shite.

                                          1. "Give until it hurts, because you don't need earthly riches, you peasants..."? Nice. No wonder the dark ages lasted so long.

                                          2. Atheists and agnostics not only don't demand payments from anyone, they also don't provide young boys for the enjoyment of their highest ranking leaders. They're not a drain on tax dollars (because they pay taxes), and they don't hold undue influence on world affairs. But yeah, the church is great. Without the church, we wouldn't have had all those great, awesome wars!

Disclaimer: I was raised in a Baptist church, and could see the inherent hypocrisy by the time I was 7 or 8. So no sale on "give us money or you go to hell" or any of the other BS churches spew.

Remember.... Religion is like a penis. Many people have one, it's ok to be proud of it, but under no circumstances should you go waving it around in public or shoving down someone's throat without permission.

If the church had followed that dictum, the world would probably be a better place now.
