What kind of licensing does Microsoft and others offer for people who need to dick around with hypervisors, namely hyper-v and vsphere? Is there a "good" way to do it that is cost effective for a home lab?
Hyper-V is free, so the licensing would be with the Server OS.
Which you can download free trials from their website which last for 180 days.
Oh cool. I'm just going to pay for the OS. From what I'm seeing here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/cloud-platform/windows-server-2012-r2-pricing your options are pretty limited if you want to have a lot of different VM's running.
You don't need to pay a single cent for a fully functioning Hyper-V, just download Microsoft Hyper-V Server (NOT Windows Server with Hyper-V). There are no restrictions or limits in functionality. It's just not allowed to install any roles but Hyper-V and Failover Cluster. Fair enough from my point of view.
For the guests, well, when it's Windows you need to pay for it, no matter the hypervisor. If you only plan for Linux/BSD VMs for example, you won't need any server licenses or CALs at all.

Or do I just use XenServer 6.5 until things "catch" up like unitrends?

What issue does Unitrends have? Did you open a thread on that?

No simply has not supported when I try and add the host. So guessed it's too new for them........ Hence thinking go back to 6.5 for now.

yeah downloaded yesterday http://www.unitrends.com/products/software/unitrends-enterprise-backup, yeah it shows XenServer as an option but when I try and add the XenServer it just says not supported.

I don't see that there for that product. Can you screenshot where it says that it can back up XS via the backup API? I know that it can be deployed on top of XS and that it can backup XS via an agent. But XS direct backups (via snaps) was always in a different product and I did not think that it had been rolled in yet.

I saw chatter about rolling UVB into the standard Unitrends line at one point, but I have no idea what ever came of that. AFAIK, only UVB supports actual XS backup via API.

that was my understanding but it seems like they have completed the roll up or something.

I have yet to see it in an actual product thus far, not that I have been looking hard.

The screen shot in the other thread of Unitrends UEB Standard says that it is included now.

Giving up on XenServer for now...............
Just tried to re-install it on the Dell R510 and now it won't see the bloody 64GB USB Stick but nor does the server ahhhhhhhhhhh. So whacked in an old 160GB SATA into the server and installed onto that and it won't boot off it
Installed and booting hyper-v so going to use that for now as Unitrends FREE will support it and ESXi
Not saying I won't use XenServer but until I get "better/newer" machine to play with it's for another day I'm afraid .
-
@hobbit666 That sucks. We've had lots of issues with those models and SD cards disappearing. Nothing with SATA drives, though.

This is why I default to installing to an internal SATA hard drive, and not to a USB stick or SD card...
-
Now I reboot and made a raid with 2x1TB (Raid1) it won't boot lol...........Might just pull the server out dump it next to my desk so I can reboot and play with settings without walking back and forth to the server room lol.
Soooooooo XenServer might have a 2nd (or is it 5th by now?) chance of being used will update Monday as need to make room first lol.
-
Now I reboot it's working (hyper-v) but no NIC!!!!!! but yet it was there when I first installed. Downloading XenServer7 (with latest fix) will try again! Now I've moved all my Hard Drives round

Dude I think you need a sledgehammer instead.
Me too! Very temped to just use ESXi again to get my Linux machines running again and wait until a better server becomes available to use
(well going to give XenServer one last try!)
