Um, it's been about twelve years since I went to a movie theatre with any regularity, but from the 1970s till recently, I've never, ever been in a theatre were you DIDN'T pick your own seat. What weird world did that guy live in?
In prison you're assigned seats when you go to a theater.

Sure, but you still remember things that are the same from before you went in. Twelve years is not a long time to remember going to the movies.
Like you wouldn't get out of prison after twelve years without a hamburger and be surprised that hamburgers exist, just as they did before you went in.
