Oracle is adding several new features to MySQL. But, these features are not available in the open source editions. These are enterprise only features. Seems to be that this type of move will only do more to strengthen the MariaDB project and continue to make MySQL a side line in the database discussion.

I would agree with that. If Oracle doesn't roll all (or a lot) of its updates and new features to MySQL into the open source code base, no one is going to care. MariaDB is going to continue to drift apart from it and likely will be more advanced, stable and supported and MySQL will just languish in the land of "no one remembers it."

Honestly, the real winner here is PostgreSQL which just continues to get better and better and to build more and more market momentum.

MariaDB is now the default package installed with CentOS7. If you issue yum install mysql; on CentOS7 Minimal, it will install MariaDB unless you go add the EPEL.

Most of the Linux distros have switched up MySQL or MariaDB. That is where Oracle is really losing ground. People think that they are using MySQL but under the hood it is MariaDB. Slowly the MySQL marketshare is eroding.
