Wyze cam alternative firmware.
-
@JaredBusch mentioned alternative firmware for the Wyze cams the other day. Looks like someone has made the update process easy, and open source.
https://github.com/openipcamera/openipc-firmware
I might have to try it out once my new home lab box arrives and I have a place to put a DVR of some sort.
Worst thing that can happen is I'm out $20

OpenIPC is crap and dead. It is a fork of Dafang and hasn't been updated.
The firmware I mentioned is Dafang.
It is super easy.
grab an small SD card and make a 512MB partition formatted FAT32. Put the binary on it named as boot.bin.
Put it in the WyzeCam v2 and hold the button down for 10 seconds while you power on.
Wait 3 minutes. While waiting, grab a second SD card of whatever size and format it FAT32.
Clone/Download the Dafang-Hacks repo from github (https://github.com/EliasKotlyar/Xiaomi-Dafang-Hacks)
Copy the entirety of the firmware_mod folder to the SD card.
Edit the wpa_supplicant file with your SSID information.
By this time 3 minutes have passed.
Unplug the camera and put int he SD card with the new firmware.
Boot up and when you see the blue light go solid, you will find the IP of the camera in your DHCP leases.
Navigate to it and loging withroot
/ismart12
Set up anything you want to setup. -

The Timezone setting is backwards. I have to set it to UTC+6 instead of UTC-6
-
The Dafang firmware sets up a standard RTSP feed.
I have it open right here in VLC -

Glad I mentioned something before jumping in!

This is interesting. . I'm assuming @travisdh1 you're thinking of doing this to multiple wyze cams and recording to a digital DVR?

ZoneMinder is the solution I mentioned elsewhere. I have it spun up but not configured yet.

So you have to flash the firmware on your cameras and use zoneminder to capture the feed.
Has anyone done a how to on this yet?

What, you don't put devices on a production network that you have to put a 3rd part firmware on to get them to work how you want?

@JaredBusch I'm probably just blind but where did you get the boot.bin from as I'm not seeing it.
I have a Wyze cam PTZ if it matters.
