@fateknollogee Free for standalone KVM hosts, this seems interesting. Please share your testing results =).
-
@romo we've got several places where we might want to use that, and more soon.

Why? Agentless VM Level backups are useless. You've said that often enough.

What is a stand alone KVM host? I'm not seeing it

https://storware.gitbook.io/storware-vprotectStandalone meaning your "normal" Virt-manager style KVM install.

I'll update you tomorrow after I test some restores.
I've backed up a few vm's to AWS S3 & to on-prem servers. -

If you don't like "Agentless" this product is not for you....(not you @JaredBusch )

Seems like anything not clustered.

Non-ideal isn't the same as useless. This is why these discussions are difficult. Why does something not being "the best for most cases" turn into "useless" as what people hear?

Jared likes Agentless. I tend to not like them, it's non-portable. And that specific thing hits us already with our current backups at some clients. So to address limitations of their existing agentless system, and their mix of hypervisors, kludges like this are necessary. Or a move off of their current agentless infrastructure that they paid a lot for.

@romo unfortunately the free one has not CBT

Stop acting like I've ever said this. I said agent based is often better, and in the example here I just demonstrated why agentless caused a need for two backup systems instead of one. Please don't encouraging repeating things that people don't say, because some people actually start to believe that that has been said, they are that gullible.

@scottalanmiller hey it was a smiling face. It was intended as a joke!

I get it, but people start to repeat that stuff quickly and truly start to believe that there is a group who thinks that things are black and white and certain things that should be grey areas are actually black and white. Like instead of "agentless is rarely the best option" people start to believe "agent based is the only option." Or at least believe that a group of people claim such. It's happened a lot. RAID is a good example.

CBT (in the o/s) is "rumored" to be coming in the 7.6 release of RHEL/CentOS.

Which will be awesome. Windows Server 2016 has this, but it doesn't work well. I had it setup previously and it corrupted our test share. We had to disable it and revert to our backup.

Which backup software were you using when it was enabled?

This was a combination, Xen Orchestra and something else for the file level ( I don't recall which atm ) but it was a name brand one. Maybe it was Backup Exec ( I honestly can't remember )
