Cloud hosting solution for Shadowcontrol CMD

  • Hi guys,

I'm trying to get Shadowcontrol CMD deployed to manage my clients Storagecraft software/backups. I initially setup things on vultr, but it appears that kvm is not a supported platform.

Had the same issues as this guy here:
    https://www.storagecraft.com/support/forum/unable-install-vps-instance

So now I either need Hyper-V or ESXI. It's annoying because I have azure credits, but azure doesn't provide console access which I need.

Anybody know of any inexpensive cloud hypervisors, either ESXI or Hyper-V? Thanks.

  • Service Provider

I'm not aware of any VPS that provides what you want. You can only get Hyper-V or VMware, AFAIK, from private cloud offerings which would be enormous cost.

I can't think of anyway around your problem. And Azure is not Hyper-V, so it may or may not work. It's officially virtualized on Azure, which is related to but not identical to Hyper-V.

[email protected] uses VMware. Bwahahaha. Loading Windows there is, of course, unlicensable and the platform is non-viable.

  • @scottalanmiller Yeah I reached out to rackspace and the woman I talked to - "probably around $400 a month." yeahhhhh...a little more than I'm looking to spend....

It looks like 1&1 cloud might use vmware...

Yes, because of the price only the "bottom of the barrel" companies use VMware. It's those that lack the internal expertise and are hoping to buy their way out of having in house knowledge. Which is a scary thing in your cloud vendor ;)

  • KVM isn't one of our supported platforms, but if they allow it you might be able to build it in Hyper V or ESX then send up the VHD to them.

Uhhh. So is it not supported or they just have it check at install? That's ridiculous.

  • That seems ridiculous. How did they make it NOT work? Wouldn't it just work by default unless they put in some effort to keep it from working?

  • Yeah I don't get it. All I know is that I get a "no root file system" error. Vultr would be perfect for this - super cheap..just can't seem to figure out how to get around this error.
