Intel Atom C2000 Series Processors Bricking Devices?
-
The Register reported this Feb. 6, 2017. Atom C2000 series processors can brick the system due to an issue with the real time clock. The only product specifically sited is Synology's DS1815+, but many vendors used/use those processors.
I'd be keeping an eye out for updates or upgrades in the near future for anything containing one of those processors.

Can a software patch fix something like this?

Seeing as how I still don't know exactly what the problem is, impossible to say. If it is the RTC, then I'd imagine it should be possible to fix with a software patch. Resetting the thing before the known bug would be the easiest thing to do.

The article specifically says that it can be fixed by a change on the board (though i wonder if they mean chip?).

Ah, right, that would imply that a hardware change needs to happen.
