Dell R720 vs R720xd

Does anyone know the difference between the Dell R720 and R720xd. I know Dell had servers advertised as "cloud server" at one time. I think many have said to stay away from those models. Is that what the "xd" model represents?

IIRC it's drive bays and config options? I recall it being pretty obvious on their server configuration page thingy. I'll check later on if you're still stuck, I hear users in distress.

I had received an email from xByte to buy this model at a pretty good price. Does anyone think buying a system that is a generation old would be a bad thing for a production system?

Nope, the R720xd's are really nice boxes. You won't sacrifice anything by going to them.

@syko24 Absolutely no issues with buying an unit from that generation of Dell servers. Buy from a reputable seller who backs it up with a warranty and you shouldn't have any issues.

"Cloud" models is another way of stating "not enterprise". It means less reliable, no hardware RAID, etc. They are cheap because they are bare. Not appropriate for SMBs, so you are correct there.

Even much older than that is fine. Buying up to about five years old is normally fine for SMBs. It's more about support and capacity than about age.

That's where it is from. It was one of those email offers xByte sends out every so often. The total price of the server is almost the cost of the drives alone from Dell. Can't really pass it up.
