I've been working really hard to keep up with DuoLingo and Mango Languages again. Once you get into the groove it is pretty easy. But if you get out of it, things get really hard, really quickly.

Concur whole-heartedly. I've managed to get at least one lesson in but at this point, I'm just trying to maintain what I know thus far.

I missed yesterday and lost my 5 day streak.

I wish that they would soften it to double the amount in double the time. Like if you are set for one lesson every day, you don't lose your streak if you do two lessons either the day before or the day after.

I could just as easily skip a day and then the next day to 5 lessons... I wish it was more like that.

Yeah, they do it to raise money.

Getting my ass back on track

I've been having good luck and experiences with their Swedish lessons at: http://www.innovativelanguage.com/
The phone app seems to be excellent so far. It's worth a look for sure.
Actually, the site I use is: swedishpod101.com
It's probably similar for other languages.

Do they try to sell things, or is it all free?

They try to sell things. And it's annoying, but the content is worth it imo.

Does the app really teach stuff or just give you some practice material?

Not sure what you mean, practice is learning...
Download the app on Android/iPhone and try it out. It takes 2 minutes. You can un-install if you don't like it.

LIke does it actually teach language rules, or just drill you on things it expects you to already know from somewhere else.

I haven't explored it enough to know, I've only been listening to the audio. But they do explain rules when needed.

A lot don't. Too often it is just drills, no underlying info.
