Would it be possible to add vendor pages that IT Pros can give unbiased and frank reviews of vendors and their products? Something that the vendor could not persuade a pros opinion on, but something that ML would maintain? Would that be of interest to anybody? Not a place for rants but of honest opinions.
-
We have discussed this before and came to the conclusion that we didn't want to do that... What do you think now?
-
There is no platform for that within the NodeBB system right now, it would need to be a totally independent component. There are myriad problems with review platforms, making one is an intense undertaking to do well. And really, basically no one does. Vetting if people are really customers or not, figuring out what is actually being reviewed versus ancillary stuff (see Amazon product reviews that are actually reviews of unrelated shipping issues) or dealing with reviews based on confusion.
On a personal level, I dislike reviews as a concept. They sound amazing, but I've never seen a system that has value. Most end up being super misleading because they attempt to aggregate data that needs to be vetted individually.
We DO have a review section. But it is normal threads. I think that that is about the best that we could hope for. Let me create a fake review and show you how it could work.
-
That totally make sense and I'm good with those answers. Unless we're all taking the painstaking task of monitor reviews, it would be totally impractical for just one person to vet reviews day in and day out.

Now if you have an issue with a Vendor or something please feel free to post and let us know about it. We do know want to know these things.

Right, which is what happens if you do any aggregation. If you just do "post your review and let others read them", it works, but it is a big effort to see if people like things or not. BUT, that's what we have today and it does work. Maybe we need to make review "headers" for people to respond to.
-
One of the benefits to the way reviews work here today is that you can read individual reviews, and judge the value of the reviewer and see when it was posted. So while it takes more effort to see a review, you get way more value from it. And you can see people ask the reviewer for clarification, point out when things were incorrect in their review, etc.
-
Review aggregation also causes problems with versions and updates. Early reviews might say that a product had a bug or was broken, but that might get fixed and then those reviews remain but no longer apply.

Wouldn't the review topic and tags suffice for this?
The brand name, the model name, the tag "review" in the reviews category.
I don't think much else would be needed... Maybe auto tagging based on the subject of the post and the category it is in?

Maybe a "Reviewer Bot" needs to create review headers that are official, then people can respond to them.

Does NodeBB support such a thing?

It's just an account like ML News so that people could see that it was ML posting an official review topic instead of people making ad hoc ones in varying formats.
-
One thing that I don't like about other review systems is the ability of anonymity or fake profiles. Only under certain circumstances could I understand anonymity, and that is really under whistleblowing circumstances. Don't get me wrong. I think we need anonymity on the Internet, but that is a whole nother topic.

So instead of a persons own words to right the review (think amazon) this Reviewer Bot gets a review submitted, and then post the review for the product listed?
I could see it working, seems like it might be a bit of a painful endeavor though..
-
Okay, maybe instead of a vendor page, just vendor.product tags. I could go into ML, search for a vendor or a product, and see if anybody else has posted a review on that product, whether good or bad.

Which this already exists. People just need to use the appropriate tags when making an OP.

HP ProliantEtc etc

@scottalanmiller is it possible to automatically add a tag to specific categories?

No need, since it is already in the category. Why tag a review when it is hard locked to being a review?

I don't have an exact answer to that other than to search "review of _____" of course if you were already in the review categories.....
