I was born in the city and grew up outside of it. NTG is based here (we say Buffalo because that is better known to outsiders.) It really is amazing how few places really have the feel of Rochester. Even neighbouring cities are very different. And yes, garbage plates really are the big local food.

It really is. Small city, only 1.1 million in the metro area, but a lot of history and culture.

Believe it or not, it doesn't even really feel like a city.

If you look at it and see it in real life, you'd understand. It is 1,100 kilocalories and it is a big mess of greasy food all mixed together. It is a huge mess. And so delicious.

Places that serve garbage plates tend to be open 24 hours - a common thing in Rochester which is the actual city that never sleeps. So getting them with eggs as a breakfast dish is common.

The original place that started them was in the hood. Front door full of bullet holes. Bathrooms without toilets, just holes in the floor. Very dangerous. @Dominica are there once and there was a fight and a guy was thrown through her table (broke the table down to the floor.)

The second location opened in rochester's much safer red light district. That location was famous for getting packed with drinks at 2am when the bars closed and with prostitutes coming off shift at 4am.

@scottalanmiller You forgot the part where just after we managed to make it outside, another guy jumped up on the counter waving a gun and said "everybody down." We hauled ass out of there.

That's why I only went to the safe prostitute hangout location. Nothing scary ever happened there.

Well the car we took got broken into as we sat five feet from it, but that was all.

My high school era friends would, for over a decade, meet there on Thanksgiving night every year too.

                                      That doesn't look healthy.

Nope. Not so healthy. Lol. But tasty.
