Did you have frost yet? We've had two instances of a light frost already.
-
No we haven't yet. Not quite cold enough over night. But any colder and we would.

Wow light frost already... while that may not be early for NY,.. It does seem early over all... Is that indicative of being a heavier winter?

It is a bit early... maybe a week or two. Not sure if it is an indication of a harder winter or not.

@gjacobse That's what we have been saying down here in the deep south. This summer was short and mild down here. Usually indicative of a rougher winter coming up. It's October and we're already running the heat at night. That normally isn't necessary until around Thanksgiving, lol.
-
They are saying we will be getting a hard winter here this year. First frost is between the 15-25 and first snow on Halloween. But we are usually at the end of Peak colors for fall. And things are just turning now. So we are a little behind here this year.

NY snow on halloween isn't unheard of, right? Not a dramatic start to the year.

Wow, we don't have our heat on here yet. I'm hoping I won't have to worry about it until the end of October. If it is any indication we didn't turn our heat on until November 2nd last year. Although we use coal as our main source of heat and that is a bit more work to get going... probably me being super lazy was the issue.

We had coal till April of last year and bought a Pellet furnace. So happy to have that. Takes like 2 minutes to start up the first time and so much cleaner.

No doubt. We get coal for significantly less then we can get pellets and I did all the labor setting it up and plumbing it into the baseboard system. After spending $5,700 the first winter we were here on oil and spending ~$1,100 on coal last year it is working out fairly well. My wife isn't too pleased with the coal dust everywhere though :(.

Yeah we had propane boiler heat. We spent close to $5K one year keeping the house at 60. So we switched to wood, then upgraded to coal and now to Pellets. We realized that without a teenager to help with the hauling of wood or coal that we didn't want to keep it up. He will be moving out eventually. The Pellets are something I even I can do myself without help. And is so much cleaner. It is more than the coal was though.
