Code Repository Powerhouse GitHub Takes a Quarter Billion in New Funding
-
GitHub receives $250M USD in additional funding. Interesting to see that 70% of GitHubs users are external to the US.
-
Great company and product, I use them every day.
-
Pretty amazing that a source code repository host could be valued near $2bn USD!
-
I use them for some open source projects I ticker with.
But I do not pay for their service. At the moment Atlassian's Bitbucket offers private repositories with up to 5 contributors for free. As we only have 5 active developers at the moment, it works out.
I would have to look costs if our software development side grows.

For cheap you can run your own repos too, but there is something awfully nice about having stuff be hosted. Especially something so easy to deal with.

Oh, aye. I thought about setting up my own GitLab server. Then decided my time was not worth it compared to a free Bitbucket or even a paid GitHub repo.
-
I am very tempted to install GitLab too, but keep deciding that I'm being silly and should not do it, I just don't need another server hanging around to manage when BitBucket does such a great job for the little bit that I use it.

If you already have GitHub or BitBucket, etc al, Why set up GitLab?
I'm cheap and enjoy tinkering with stuff, so I have my own GitLab setup... I have it's backups exported to a place that CrashPlan can backup... Problem solved!

Unlimited users, unlimited size, total flexibility, all data kept private. GitHub is never free, BitBucket is almost never free or is so without being private (we tried it with two users and it turned out to not be an option.)
