We all have songs that at some point in our life had a dramatic impact on our tastes in music. Whether it was what led us into a new band, or even a new genre/genres of music, we've all got at least a song or two that did that for us.

For me, the single biggest influencer was "Through the Fire and Flames" by Dragonforce. It was butchered to death by Guitar Hero people, but I was a fan a good 3-5 years BEFORE it hit Guitar Hero. The reason this song was my gateway was because I was raised for the first 12-13 years of my life on country and some classic rock, and only the very mild stuff. Never any Metallica, Ozzy, etc. Nothing metal. Nothing hard rock. Pretty much nothing alternative.

This song opened my eyes to a whole new world, and allowed me to branch out and discover my own musical tastes, much to my parents' chagrin, who did not always agree with my musical tastes, but after my father insisted on hearing what I was listening to ("Hell" by Disturbed at the time), they pretty much just left me alone. Lol

Anyways, a high school classmate just posted a video from YouTube of a 15-year-old girl completely rocking my song on guitar, and damn...she nailed it! EXTREMELY impressive, and I thought'd I share and start a discussion.

      Youtube Video

So, what was your gateway song/band?

      Thanks,
      A.J.

A big influence for me was my mom being a pro-level polka accordion player. She played the accordion all throughout my childhood. My home was always filled with accordion music.

I don't. I have various obsessions with various bands throughout my life, but not really any one song.

My love of music started when I was 8 or 9 and someone bought me The Beatles compilation "Rock'n'Roll Music Volume 2". It literally changed my life, and I was obsessed with The Beatles for the next couple of years. This was around the time John Lennon was shot so I guess there was a lot of stuff about The Beatles around at the time which I was exposed to at a very impressionable age.

My father decided I would be a musician (he had no musical ability at all). I was also not talking at the age of 4 (I signed but I didn't speak). So my parents started me with voice lessons and flute lessons at 4 years old. First thing I ever sang? Oh Holy Night. That to this day is one of my favorite Christmas songs. Now, I tend to be more of a metal head (old school not the new crud). But as most people who know me well know I will listen to lots of different stuff. Example my play list this morning for working out: Led Zepplin, Iron Madien, Metallica, Les Mis sound track, Petra, Miranda Lambert.

Music is always playing in my house. Never quiet here.

I believe it. My current landlord has a dog that "speaks" in his own way to you. It's a series of moans, grunts, and gruffs.

I actually don't listen to a lot of music any more. I used to in college and highschool but overall I find it distracting now. When I do listen to music I like classic rock, and maybe some early punk rock stuff. I don't think I've listened to a new band that I actually like.

Ughh... our little golden retriever purrs at you when she wants something... if you ignore her she walks off huffing and puffing. She does howl along with the radio sometimes... she likes Marvin Gaye...

She was a major influence musically and in many other ways to me too when I was growing up.
