The locks in Lockport were fun to explore too. There are many parts of the Erie Canal that are cool to explore.

@dominica's parents live one block off of the canal. The kids do things on the canal regularly (like fireworks, food, ice cream, etc.) We'd like to do some serious canal history stuff.

For those interested, watch How the West Was Won which talks about the canal, Utica and some of its influence towards the beginning of the classic film.

Didn't do Fort Niagara, but did do the Falls and then went and hiked Letchworth. Ended up being a fantastic weekend. Will keep the Fort on my list of things to do if we get to that part of the state in the future.

@Minion-Queen, @art_of_shred, @Mike-Ralston, @Eric and I all grew up right at Letchworth. Letchworth was a part of daily life, you would sometimes drive through it as a short cut! My girls went there to see the canyon, falls and dam just a couple months ago.

Albright-Knox in Buffalo is a world class modern art museum, very well known.

If not looking to do stuff with kids, stay in either Ithaca or Watkins Glen for a weekend and do the Finger Lakes Wine Trail (the real ones are Seneca, Cayuga and Keuka Lakes.) Learn about the region, explore the foodie culture and learn all about wine making. (Beer and mean made along the trail too.)

Yes we spend tons of time at Letchworth. The small museum there is nice as well. Not a lot there but still good. In the fall we love driving through there. Right now you cant get far though as they don't plow the snow out.

Yep, we've done the trail and more. I love "downtown" Ithaca. Very artsy. Watkins Glen is nice to walk around, although not during racing season. This is great info, will be planning more weekends.

Speaking of museums, our kids are slated to hit the Prado this spring with their mom.

Nuts. I just saw that Niagara is starting to freeze over too!

Yup had friends that live up there say they can play hockey on part of the river (first time they have ever seen it frozen).

What about the State Museum in Albany? Have not been there since I was about eight.

I finally got to go to Strong recently and I was actually disappointed by the video game exhibit. I know they bought a gigantic private collection recently and even have one of 10 known copies of Tengen Tetris for Sega Genesis (one of the rarest games out there) and yet, the vast majority of the games they have are being stored in the basement of the building. They have very little on display. I have a better game display in my game room than they have.

Also, they have an impressive array of arcade machines but are using them as a cash grab and have not put them on Free Play. Considering they already charge extra for the carousel and the butterfly garden (worth it, by the way) charging the few quarters for each arcade/pinball machine just seems like a dick move.

Speaking of things to see in Western NY worth seeing, has anyone mentioned the Planetarium in Rochester? It's always fun to see the star show projected up on the dome. Alternatively, if you're near Buffalo, not Rochester, head up to Niagara Falls (the town, not the natural wonder) in NY and there is an Aquarium there that is somewhat small, but very enjoyable.

@Awkward-Gamer Yup, I mentioned the planetarium earlier in the thread. 🙂

I've been to the Ithaca Science Museum but that was over a decade ago. Haven't been to Strong or the Corning Glass Museum...all on my list of things to do...

We went to Corning Glass Museum for Valentines day with my future father-in law (he drove in from Pittsburgh area to meet us). It was really good well worth the price of admission. They are also adding on a huge expansion for more contemporary glass art, which looks really cool. I think it will be open next month or in may.

You should come up and see Niagara Falls. They say they wont melt until well into May this year.
