Web Based Genealogy Software

Does anyone know a good open source (or free, at least) web-based software package for hosting family trees online? I'm looking at a hosted option too, but want to know what the options are. I'm using Ancestry.com right now but it is so expensive and really all I need at this point is the tree, not the research capabilities. I want something that I can use and share with other researchers in my family without needing everyone to pay for something just so that we can share the data that we have.

GENi looks interesting. I've seen a lot of good data in there. It appears to be free and, of course, it is hosted. From what I can tell, it is free and a part of MyHeritage. I can't quite tell how it is monetized and how it differs from MyHeritage itself. They seem to be competitive services, which is odd.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these?

I like the "one tree" idea. But I don't want anything that I have to keep paying for just to have it store a tree. It's a very basic database, even if it holds all of human history. No need for a lot of money to be exchanged for that.

Without actually making an account, it looks like that you can only add your immediate family. Then beyond that you invite relative and they add theirs and thus it confirms and adds to your tree.
So without the subscription, it seems useless.

Especially since you only need one recursive query on one table. This is a basic org database query using a CTE.

Unsure about web based - but I know that the Gramps-Project is supposed to be pretty decent.
It is suppose to be able to open files from Family Tree Maker also...

Except you need some weird loopbacks and stuff. For those of us from severely inbred families it gets pretty complicated.
