Re: Internal domain name same as external domain - DNS issues!!
Hi, i am new this site, so just poping in as i am facing a similar type of issue if anyone can assist me on it.
• we have just deployed our new child domain and the name same as our subdomain which is also used for emails e.g. our email subdomain is abc.xyz.com and our child domain is also abc.xyz.com. our emails are on office365 and the domain is parked on godaddy.
so now when i do a nslookup from my domain or any pc connected to that domain, it takes me to the godaddy, which is causing email sending issues.
i tried to setup a mx record on the child domain to point it to the office365 dns but it doesn't help. still i get the same godaddy on nslookup.
when i change the users DNS from local child domain dns to the isp dns, i get the nslookup query resolved for the domain correctly to the office365 records.
Is there anyway you can assist me on this or give some suggestion?
Your assistance will be highly appreciated.Best regards.

Can you show us your DNS records?
When you ping mail.abc.xyz.com you get something on godaddy? That tells me that you have a record in your local DNS that's returning the godaddy information. At least I'm assuming this for now, assuming that the IP stack on the client is using the DNS server of your internal domain.
Who is your SOA? Not that this really matters for the problem at hand, I'm just asking.

What does the MX record for abc.xyz.com say from the Internet and from NSLookup internally? They should match.

@dbeato Hi i already tried to create all the records including the CNAME, MX, which i added when setting up the domain on Godaddy to Office365, but still i get the query records of MX to Godaddy only.
Hi when i do the nslookup from the internet outside the domain, i resolve to abc-xyz-com.mail.protection.outlook.com
but when i try to nslookup from the domain, i get resolved to: (Godaddy Name Servers)
primary name server = ns21.domaincontrol.com
responsible mail addr = dns.jomax.net
serial = 2018110600
refresh = 28800 (8 hours)
retry = 7200 (2 hours)
expire = 604800 (7 days)
default TTL = 86400 (1 day)Thanks

@dbeato I have added all the DNS Records, which i used to setup on office365.
CNAME, MX but still the nslookup goes to the godaddy.i just want to ask i have a domain forwarder, do i have to remove it?

@Dashrender when i ping mail.abc.xyz.com i don't get a reply, the SOA is the primary and the secondary domain on the local domain. i don't know if this is what you were asking.

Hi All, i actually matched the DNS of godaddy on the primary domain also, i created the same of godaddy primary records on the primary domain and the subdomain of godaddy records on the child domain.
good progress that now i am able to resolve the nslookup MX of abc.xyz.com & xyz.com on the primary domain network to correct mail.protection.outlook.com which i am able to get from the internet.
but still on the child domain it goes to the Godaddy NS.Any suggestions please.

If the MX points to GoDaddy, then the MX hasn't been updated yet. Whether it has not propagated or is done incorrectly, we will know in time.

HuzefaNever test DNS with ping. Test with nslookup. Whether you can ping or not is a factor of many things, DNS just one of them and only sometimes. nslookup tests DNS and nothing else.
