Lightweight Windows OS

This is a question really for @scottalanmiller, but input from other is of course welcome..
Before you say go to Linux - please understand that for this task,... Linux is already being used, and that is part of the issue. For this need, it would seem that Windorx is the needed OS.
I run a software call CQRLog - it does logging for Ham Radio, in addition to controlling the radio. However, there are some issues with this software pairing. Not to mention the CQRLog software is just not as developed as N3FJP software that so many of my fellow Ham's use...
So,.. I am curious if there is a light weight version of WIndow - or a version of Windows that is suitable for this application. This would be installed on an older eeePC NetBook PC,.. so Windows 10 would be out.

That would be useless, that's only for those garbage store malware items, not for any real computing.

I'm not aware of any extra light version of Windows available today. Windows 10 is the lightest of the Windows family. There are mobile builds of older versions, but none are all that light and easily won't work as anything before Windows 10 is ancient at this point.

Back in the days, I remember using nLite for Windows XP. There is a program called NTLite for 7, 8.1 and 10.

Yeah, I think you're going to have to gut Windows. But on Windows 10 you can't ever do an upgrade or it will try and bring everything back.

If you keep it 100% off the network and are only using it as a tool for your radio, I'd just stick XP on it and be done... possibly Win7 if it will run it.

The lightest version of MS windows in my experience is Windows server 2008 R2 SP1
That thing does not come with .net framework 3.5 unless you enable it, also it installs very fast.
I am not saying buy it, but IMO and experience with MS OSes, it is light weight MS OS after fresh install.

For most of what I do, I suppose off-network would be fine. However during contests (Field Day) the ideal way to set up would be to have a network so you have a single log file. the Contesting software that so many use - the N3FJP - will write to a single log from all the stations (some Field Day stations operate with 30 radios.... Yikes). So it is better to have that network option rather than trying to merge 30 different logs.
Now granted it could be a free standing network with no Internet connection. But - most want that also for directly updates and such.
For what I want to do,.. Linux really seems to be the answer - but the N3FJP software doesn't run under Linux.. it's Windows Only.

@gjacobse A couple years ago our club tried N3FJP under WINE it didn't work out at all; wonder if its been updated enough now to give it another try?

Wine has been through a lot of revisions since then.

Lightest used here is win 10 iot core. Which is free. The x86 version maybe can be virtualized.

Spend $100 and get a better a laptop.
EeePC NetBook PC sucks, it doesn't even work well on XP.
