      1. A2 hosting (I picked them, because a quick google search yielded a comparison site, listing A2 as a pretty good option.)

      I take it that you missed their thread this week where they were shown to be ridiculously slow?

        1. Vultr. Get a $5 box, spin up WP on CentOS7.

        Doesn't really make sense to build your own at that price. Not unless you are setting up a hosting business.

          🙂 Yep, must have totally missed that one.

              What's the story with those guys? Weren't they bought out a couple years ago by some large org?

                Yeah, and they have remained mostly the same, but I don't like what they've joined. I'm not saying that you should use them, only that we were on them before they were acquired and they remained good. We are moving off as we have several large clients doing loads of websites now and it will make sense to run a dedicated infrastructure for them. But that's very special case.

                It's more money, but Cloudways is here in the community and offers a premium service. But you can't get below $11/mo.

                  @scottalanmiller

                  So with ASO, for WP, would you recommend their "Shared" plan at $5 or their specific "WP" plan?

                    I've never used their WP specific plan. Their $5 shared plan has been very good.

                                How is basic webhosting a market that is so hard to get a good product in?

                                  Because its a race to the bottom commodity service.

                                  Give up the idea that you can get good service for cheap these days. It just does not work. You need to pay more if you want good service.

                                    Sure, but show me an expensive once that is good. Cloudways looks great, but lacks a Softaculous-like component that a lot of people are looking for.

                                      I run a single site on a VPS. It's easier to manage Drupal installations that way. It's set for auto update and it automatically does a backup of the site/database each night and ships it off. It's as simple as drush archive-restore on a new machine.

                                        Well there is this FANTASTIC company out there called Dara IT. You can choose from a list of providers and they do all the config, handle billing, support. Oh it is a dream to work with those guys.
