Port - Server Build Advice

Hi Everyone
We support a local school
they have asked that we build a server for them;
they have;
15 staff
they want;
a dc
a file/print server (about 500gb of data)
RDS server
i was thinkiing about virtualising 3 servers to meet the above requirements.
They dont have a big budget, can anyone recommend a build?

So before going into the hardware of what you would need for this, I congratulation you on wanting to virtualize. +1 point for you sir.
There are plenty of options to save on the cost of licensing, Linux distro's being the default option.
If the school is wanting to save, you can't go much further than that. Short of theft. . .
So do you need help planning the hardware, the software, the installation, the backup process or all of the above?

Zentyal is a capable linux distro that can handle all of the services you're asking for. Without issue. It comes in 2 versions, the community edition (self supported or 3rd party) or the commercial version which comes with support from the developer.
As for the hardware you'd need to run this, you don't have a lot of demand listed. You'd be able to find a well priced server with warranty from xByte.
You'd want something that supports current hypervisors, XenServer, Hyper-V, KVM or ESXi (only ESXi has a pay to play model) which is fine if you need the features it offers.
You also need to consider what backup solution you are going to be using with your hypervisor. If you went with XenServer you could use Xen Orchestra with support from the developer or the community edition.
With the others you'd likely be looking at Veeam Endpoint (as at only 500GB you could use the freely offered solution without charge)

NethServer would be a choice also.

You scared me .. I thought you have like split personality or something, till i saw the port... I know i know its in the title but still..
Hmm dc for 15 folks, If they are not bringing new people in the future, you can create alternative for this, especially since you can go around and install stuff on their machines, I assume they will be 15 as well.
-
@JaredBusch Good point, Neth would work as well.

What is the actual need?
To host domain services for the 15 systems and users, along with some security concerns. File and print services aren't anything abnormal at all.
What is the RDS server used for / planned for? CALs for RDS gets expensive and would really mess up even a schools budget at reduced pricing.

Plus it would be extremely rare for a small school to actually need RDS. It would be cheaper for them to have laptops for those users and a VPN.

I think that in the end he is probably stuck. Users demand what users demand.

This is the NextCloud information that @scottalanmiller was talking about.
