Outlook 2010 Prompting for login frequently
-
The last company here divided each department (granted they are different buildings) into subdomains but also kept e-mail in a completely separate domain. "For years" every few days users will need to re-enter their credentials in order to access e-mail and it doesn't always prompt them. Sometimes it will just say "Needs password" in the bottom right hand side of outlook and you only get the prompt when you click on it. Clearly, this causes my users a lot of stress as they feel like they don't know when they are truly receiving e-mail. The last exchange server I managed, I never ran into any of the issues we have had here. That didn't create a lot of need for me to troubleshoot it unfortunately, which is why I'm reaching out today to try to figure this out.
I have never worked anywhere that used multiple domains and I don't understand the logic of it in this environment, but I'm thinking this could possibly be an issue of authenticating because of it not being configured correctly? Any information or help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are you using Office 365?
I've seen this occur were the system doesn't have the appropriate patches applied and fails to connect / repeatedly asks for credentials

I have similar situations where users have several mailboxes from at least two different domains. One is Exchange 2010 and the other 2013.
With Outlook closed, I usually have to clear the Outlook entries in the Credential Manager (Control Panel), then reenter the credentials when prompted. This resolves the issue but I'm not sure if it's a permanent fix as the users I've done this for haven't had to change their passwords yet (well, not that I can recall).

I have done the same and it is only temporary in my case. Seems to only apply to me when running cached mode though.

Found an article that said "cached mode connects to the public FQDN of the server rather than the private network name and thus it won't exchange credentials as it sees the server as being outside its currently logged in domain."

Have you done a slash 'n burn of their mail profile?
Delete everything under C:\users%username%\appdata\local\microsoft\Outlook
&
Removed their mail profile from control panel? -
@nadnerB No, but this literally applies to every user

Well, you could try turning off cached mode to see if it improves.
Speaking of going directly to your mail server, is your autodiscover.domain working correctly? -

Is your exchange proxy set in Outlook?
Never mind, just saw your above post -

-
What kind of a trust has been setup between the domains?
-
@nadnerB All external with Transitive set to No as far as exchange goes. The subdomains are child with transitive set to yes.

This is still a consistent problem. Does not seem to occur if I'm not using cached exchange mode but that is required on my network.
