@wirestyle22 said in I'm a noob, how do I make a FreePBX server:
So once I build the server, what service do I need to reach the outside world + 911? How does that work with self-hosted?
You'll purchase a SIP trunk from some place like VOIP.MS or any of a dozen other providers.
They will give you connection information that you put into your FreePBX.Additionally, you can purchase a DID (direct inward dial - basically a phone number) that will then route calls to your FreePBX server. You'll also put that information into the FreePBX server.
As for specific 911 setup - yeah JB or someone else will have to respond.
So I'm understanding this correctly, my server is connecting to the SIP Trunk.
The SIP Trunk is modulating the signal for me to provide phone services.
Is this correct? How much does this run? I bet there is an additional fee for 911 services.
EDIT: Wow. Super cheap.
yeah in the continental US it's $0.01 / minute.
Insanely cheap
Some services offer unlimited free incoming calls, too.

Well, I was going to suggest getting an account on Vultr because they allow you to upload your own ISO and build VMs, but according to @scottalanmiller Vultr's network has issues with PBXs, so that's not really an option.
When did this happen? What issues are people having, and is this a new discovery on Vultr?
New as in the last six months. We've never seen Vultr work. We have a ticket open with them.
Funny, since you saw it work at MangoCon (briefly because I ran out of time).
Additionally, @Bundy-Associates uses it all day every day without issue.Weird. We had three test systems with them, all are having traffic issues. Which DCs are you in?

It's possible that Vultr is only having issues with some carriers. But the same PBX can be moved to RS with the same line and works instantly.

The only one in production, and thus can verify consistency with, is Chicago.
MangoCon was on a northeast one. Do not recall which. That one could easily have had issues and not known as it was only used briefly.

You have also wasted your money. Even $1/month wasted is a mistake and shows bad business practices as you so often say.

Specifically regarding the one you use (VoicePulse 4 channel unlimited inbound for $11), it has not been purchasable for over a year, likely 2 now. So stop recommending it.

We've not tried Chicago. We have tested NY and Atlanta.

We get heavy load I'm told so that the cost is actually very good because of the continuous incoming calls.

Is there a preferred choice between PJSIP and Chan_SIP when setting up an extension?

PJSIP for a VoIP.ms trunk seems to be hit or miss. One system never has a problem. another system has consistent registration issues.

That's where we've done the most testing and it works sometimes and not others. Moving the same setup to RS cleared it up instantly.
