It's other threads too, unless someone hitting that thread brings the whole site to a crawl. Check if any cron jobs are running that are spiking it at the same time each day.

No, it happens anytime.
But if someone hitting that thread spikes the CPU to 100% then that will affect performance for the entire system. So other issues simply could be related to someone else browsing that thread.

It happens mostly in the morning, but has happened at all times of the day and night for me in the past.

I turned up the logging rate on the system. Hopefully we will see something telling.
So far this morning it seems to be doing well.

Did some more testing. No question it is certain threads. I only know of the one for now, but any attempt to post there brings the site down. So please no one attempt to do that.
