Playstation Vue - have you tried it?
-
I signed up for Playstation Vue tonight. I'm using a Roku 4 to access the service.
I have to say, it's not what I was wanting in the least. I was hoping something more closely resembling typical cable/satellite/Tivo setup. A grid of channels and time.
Instead it has an interface more like Netflix - giant icons showing a picture of the show/movie.
The number of live shows was tiny, I think it was around 20 when I was looking.
The 4 broadcast channels in my area don't have deals with PS Vue, so I get none of them live. I'm not sure how long after an episode airs that I do get streaming access to it.
I suppose this service would be fine for someone who casually watches any shows they like hours or days later than it's actual airing date, but I'm not like that. I typically watch the show 20 mins after it starts allowing me to fast forward through all commercials while the show is airing still.
I was also surprised that when I did visit a live channel, while it offered to start the show over, it wouldn't rewind past the point I when I joined the channel. This is probably a licensing issue, not really a technical one. There's no reason that Sony can't record every stream all the time and if there is no customer marking it for recording, they just delete it upon no on watching it.
As of now I don't plan to stay beyond the trial.

Nope. No Sony service interests me. What's the selling point over Netflix?
-
SlingTV may be more what you are after, but that one doesn't offer local channels AFAIK.

It's suppose to be a replacement for cable - get access to most of the typical cable channels. But unlike cable/satellite, they don't seem to have all of the station streaming live 24/7.
The other advantage is suppose to be the DVR in the cloud service. No more need to have a set top box with an HDD to record shows. You tell the system to record a show and it's saved in their online system. Then you can watch it anytime you like later (for up to 30 days - another advantage to in-home DVRs where you're only limited by the amount of HDD space you have.
Well we know know what it's so much less expensive than cable/satellite.

Personally I don't care about local channels, I'd be happy just getting the east coast affiliates (yeah I know, each major city has it's own). I only want the shows.
I like the idea of supporting those networks directly through the local streaming options, but damn they each want like $10+/month for access to streaming and they still show me ads. I don't see any non movie ads in Netflix and it costs me $13/month UHD streams - The big 4 are over reaching cost wise in my opinion.

Give SlingTV a shot if you don't stick with Vue. Sling doesn't have the DVR option yet, but most of the channels it does have offer some form of on-demand watching.

I heard from others that you get a first class experience on either PS4 or the Amazon Fire TV.
I purchased one today.
So far it's significantly better! There is a menu schedule, much like typical cable. Search leaves a lot to be desired, picking one letter at a time, not great. But so far much more user friendly than on the Roku.
