After having an argument (it wasn't a discussion) where the other party felt that MS was screwing them by not providing the world with Windows XP updates any more, I'm glad to see MS force people to keep up with updates. Additionally - I'd almost rather see MS move to a yearly or every other year required paid update/upgrade to continue getting patches. Yes many people would be bend out of shape over it but it would give MS a financial reason to continue supporting old OSs/software. Unfortunately this would give MS a reason to chill on development of new OSs (maybe).
It's possible that moving to a 'you only get free security/updates for 2 years' model will entice more people to upgrade their computer software, but those who can't afford the cost of a full OS upgrade, they can pay the lower fee to continue receiving updates.
The root of the argument I mentioned earlier is that the person didn't believe that computers have changed since the release of Windows XP - that windows 7/8, etc don't offer any real advantage. While this might be true to a small degree (what can an average office worker do with windows 7 that they can't in XP - use office 2013 I guess, ha). I personally feel that the security enhancements alone are worth the switch, not to mention better battery life, and possibly a lighter (or at least as light) a footprint.

I agree. Microsoft has been too liberal with their allowed updates and they have allowed a culture of support entitlement to crop up.

@Dashrender If I had that arguement with a client it would mean that I was beyond the discussion stage by many conversations. It would also mean they would no longer be my client. I only want clients that understand that IT is actually critical to their business. If they do not, then I will will drop them.
Maybe someday I will have to bend on that stance if something happens to my current client base but I have that luxury right now to be picky about the clients I keep. I'll give any client a chance, but historically that has only led to the hassle of collection attempts.

You can say that again! If they don't consider IT important, they definitely won't feel it's needed to pay for it either, instead they'll just steal your time like Scott mentions in another thread.
As for being a client or not... I was talking/arguing with a co-worker, not the people in charge. But that being said.. the people in charge definitely are frustrated that they have to do upgrades, why doesn't it just work like it did when I bought it? etc.
