But I also don't want to throw any janky Apple equipment next to about $300k worth of gear in our colo that touring clients will see.

Most of our servers all have iLO, iDRAC. I haven't used IPMI... Some of our older servers don't have the built in tools.
Have you considered adding them? Buying external KVM is no different than adding them in. We used to add in used cards for like $20.
Damn, iLo licenses are like $150

That external drive is what was being used as cheapo storage... I'm debating what to do there. Apple doesn't provide enough onboard storage to have Time Machine backups go to there, so I have to have something direct attached. But I'm not going to put some external drive on top like some bird poop on your windshield. Debating taking it apart and sliding it in next to the Mini. Wouldn't really be able to secure it unless I drilled holes but then I'm spending too much time on it...

Yeah, on current equipment. But if stuff is old enough to not have it built in it is older than those licenses. ILO has been integrated on HP gear since ~2004.

iDRAC/iLO are worth every penny unles you sit the server in the same room as you.

Addin cards for what? iDRAC / iLO? I thought you had to buy some kind of software licenses for those?

You didn't have to when you bought them as external cards.

These cards are often externally or battery powered embedded controllers that let you power on your hardware for example.

@scottalanmiller, any example of those cards? This solution looks very interesting for workstation also!

Oh I doubt that you can do that there. I'm talking about the cards that HP used, for example, before ILO released. We called the RILO if I remember correctly. They were the forerunners of ILO but they were cards rather than embedded. We used to buy them used by the bundle. Every server we had before the ILOs were included ubiquitously we added them to. Getting them used kept the price low and they were not a high risk component so used was great. RILO was something like "Remote Insight Lights Out". ILO is not Integration Lights Out.
They only worked on the servers that they were built for and needed KVM hooks on the server boards. So any HP Proliant would have had it pre-ILO going back to the late 1990s. But non-HP boards would not have it and desktops definitely would not.

@scottalanmiller just saw that again a few years ago. Well, kind of. Fujitsu remote workstation portal or something like that. Add-on PCIe card and a thin client. Works at least with W and R series Celsius workstations. Use case was to put your high end (CAD) workstations into your server room and transport everything over IP.
