      I've mostly used TrippLite and Dell rack KVMs. Just the standard ones that have a 17" monitor and rails so I can see what's going on with a server that is down.

      The scope is to check on servers that are in a critical state so using software based solutions like Multiplicity I don't think would work, since the machine isn't booted up to be able to load the software, right? Unless I'm mistaken somewhere on that...

      What KVM are you using? Got any recommendations before I buy something like this:

        We moved to OOB systems (ILO, DRAC, IPMI) as our KVMoIP solution around 2002 and never looked back. Best KVM systems ever.

          Mostly onboard OOB like SAM, but I'm also using http://www.aten.com/KVM-Over-IP.htm for some devices.

            Most of our servers all have iLO, iDRAC. I haven't used IPMI... Some of our older servers don't have the built in tools. Also other equipment like our new Mac Mini server (hold your fire!)

              Have you considered adding them? Buying external KVM is no different than adding them in. We used to add in used cards for like $20.

                    Kinda seems like a waste of C4.

                      @scottalanmiller That guy got another video where he fires at iPad's and Samsung Galaxy's.... with a .50 rifle (he's... special, to say the least and I'm not a big fan of weapons but hey, that's ok)

                        We are working quite a bit with SysML and UML here. Maybe I should add a hard requirement for the next project: "Enough explosive compounds must fit into the device in case the customer is unsatisfied"

                        @BBigford : Sorry for getting offtopic 😉

                          It's alright. Sometimes I'm not sure why I even bring up Apple products. I legitimately need to figure out what to do but their lack of support for enterprise is laughable. They tried with Xserve, then completely stepped away leaving lots of people holding the bag.

                          I can't NOT support Apple... so times like this I don't really know what to do to make the rack look nice (so the Mac server doesn't make it look terrible... ironic since people say they are so pretty), but also be functional and support C-level execs.

                            I think the Mini looks better like this...

                              But I also don't want to throw any janky Apple equipment next to about $300k worth of gear in our colo that touring clients will see.

                                  That external drive is what was being used as cheapo storage... I'm debating what to do there. Apple doesn't provide enough onboard storage to have Time Machine backups go to there, so I have to have something direct attached. But I'm not going to put some external drive on top like some bird poop on your windshield. Debating taking it apart and sliding it in next to the Mini. Wouldn't really be able to secure it unless I drilled holes but then I'm spending too much time on it...

                                    Yeah, on current equipment. But if stuff is old enough to not have it built in it is older than those licenses. ILO has been integrated on HP gear since ~2004.

                                      iDRAC/iLO are worth every penny unles you sit the server in the same room as you.
